Emory University School of Medicine offers a unique and impactful aspect of their curriculum that we are excited to share: the Community Learning Program. This program plays a crucial role in shaping future healthcare providers by emphasizing the importance of serving those in need. It focuses on treating underserved populations, including the elderly, disabled, economically disadvantaged, and immigrants and refugees.

One key part of this initiative is the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) Program, which engages older adults who are proactive, educationally curious, and eager to learn. By working directly with these active learners, medical students gain valuable experience in understanding diverse perspectives and improving their communication skills—both vital to providing compassionate and effective care.

We encourage everyone to participate and engage with this program, as it not only supports the education of future healthcare providers but also fosters stronger connections across generations and communities. Together, we can help shape a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system.

In a short two-week course, we’ll go on musical sleigh rides through the atmospheric music of two generations of Mozarts, and join groups of young skaters in music by Waldteuffel and Meyerbeer — in fact, we’ll sample a great many “Winter Pleasures” (a polka by Josef Strauss).
