Dear fellow mammals,
I'm going to be honest here —I think I speak for all of us when I say that, from time to time, I get a little frustrated. When the MyCourses notifications swarm my inbox like a pack of angry mosquitoes over a pool of stagnant water; when the midterm anxiety and cold press in like the literal metal bars of a zoo enclosure; and when I'm unmoisturized, hungry, unkempt, and staring murderously at another 3x playback speed lecture recording, I wonder in my heart of hearts how it all went so wrong. It’s in those moments where I can't help but try to steel my webbed hoofs as the frustration builds to an incommensurable restlessness—a simmering, petulant restlessness that feels almost like... like the biting jaws of a plausibly homicidal pigmy hippopotamus.
And just like Moo Deng, I too feel the desire to express this boisterous blaze of bodacious bluster not only through lunging at streams of water but through more… constructive ways as well—such as supporting crucial fee increases to the Community Solidarity Fund, the QPIRG-McGill Fund, and the creation of a brand new Fund in Support of Francophone Affairs! Yet these funds are more than a mere means of sublimating my torrential turmoil into, say, surreptitious solidarity—no, they’re one of the few means by which students can directly support community initiatives or even branch out to a new community group or language! Your referendum ballot awaits.
And once the referendum wraps up on November 8th, from 11-3 pm, you can also join the blazer bacchanal of the SSMU’s External Affairs x CL&E x AUS Fall Clothing Swap in the arts lounge on November 14th as we endeavour to channel our hippolike angst towards reducing waste. Details will follow soon, but be sure to drop off your (ideally washed) clothes in the marked bins we’ll set up outside the AUS lounge as early as possible on the day of the 14th and start clearing out your closets to make room for the clothes to come. Chers collègues mammifères,
En toute honnêteté, je pense que je parle au nom du groupe quand j’exprime que je suis un peu frustré de temps en temps. Les notifications MyCourses remplissent ma boîte de réception comme un paquet de moustiques en colère autour d’une piscine d'eau stagnante. L’anxiété de la mi-session et le froid commencent à serrer l’écrou autour de mon cou comme les barres de métal d'un enclos de zoo. J’ai la peau sèche, je suis affamé, je me néglige. J’ai les yeux rivés vers un énième enregistrement d’une lecture à une vitesse 3x, le regard meurtrier. Au plus profond de moi, je me demande comment j’en suis arrivé là. C'est dans ces moments là, où je ne peux pas m'empêcher de grincer des dents, et la frustration s'accumule en une agitation incommensurable. Il s’agit d’ une agitation mijotante et pétillante qui ressemble presque aux mâchoires mordantes d'un hippopotame vraisemblablement meurtrier.
Tel Moo Deng, je ressens un ardent désir de m’exprimer avec des jets d’eau puissants et pétillants, mais aussi en utilisant des méthodes plus constructives. Par exemple, je soutiens les augmentations de frais du Fonds de solidarité communautaire et du Fonds QPIRG-McGill. Je participe aussi à la création d'un tout nouveau Fonds à l'appui des affaires francophones ! Pourtant, je ne me sers pas simplement de ces frais afin d’apaiser ma tourmente torrentielle et d’en faire un geste de solidarité subreptice. Pour le corps étudiant, il s’agit d’un des rares moyens de soutenir les initiatives étudiantes ou de découvrir une nouvelle communauté ou une nouvelle langue ! Votre bulletin de vote vous attend.
À la fin du référendum du 8 novembre (de 11h à 15h), vous pourrez également participer à l’échange de vêtements d’automne des Affaires externes x CL&E x AUS dans le salon des arts le 14 novembre. Nous nous efforçons de canaliser notre angoisse hippopotamesque vers la réduction de déchets. Les détails suivront bientôt, mais assurez-vous de déposer vos vêtements (idéalement lavés) dans les bacs marqués que nous installerons à l'extérieur du salon AUS le plus tôt possible le jour-même.
