Sharing our military and service history

Uncover experiences of Australians who served in wars, conflicts and peace operations. The hardship of active service extends to the family and friends they leave behind. We commemorate their service and sacrifice.

When the first convoy of Australian and New Zealand troops sailed from Western Australia in 1914, it did not get far without incident. By the end of the Battle of Cocos, the HMAS Sydney crew counted 16 casualties, including 4 who died. Read about the sinking of the German warship SMS Emden.

We invite all Australian schools to enter the Anzac Day Schools’ Award. The theme is Remembering Gallipoli: 110 years, and entries close on 29 May 2025.

Remembrance Day on 11 November

On 11 November, we remember those who have died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations. It's held on the anniversary of the armistice that ended fighting in World War I. As the news broke across Australia in 1918, people celebrated in the streets. However, the armistice was also greeted with a great degree of sorrow as people remembered the dead.
