  • Laura Bennett for setting up the webinar on Mis and Disinformation with Michael Childress. Laura and Barb Hochstadt for updating the presentation. Barb for issuing press release for Mis/Disinformation.
  • Roberta, Sue, Nancy, and Lynda for checking out the voting equipment.
  • Jill and Barb for working on our Member Engagement Survey and Member Handbook
  • 30 members for completing the Member Engagement Survey.
  • Roberta and Joan for spearheading postcards and running Mock elections at LPHS
  • Pam Re for representing us at  the LWV Lake Michigan ILO conference
  • Congrats to Mike Murray for leading several referendums for several townships to add 708 Mental Health Boards.
You are invited to jump in anywhere and help us "move the ball" for democracy. We will use your talents!

Attend a “Drop-in Democracy” event: ERA Action
Join us on  Saturday, December 7, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM with Roberta and Diana, (venue to be confirmed). Join us for an hour to learn more about this important issue and then take action while you sit there. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which will update the US Constitution to protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of sex, can be added to the Constitution with one action. With just months left in office, we are urging President Biden to act to ensure that the ERA is published. The ERA will protect against the rollback of rights, provide a vital tool for the judicial branch to decide sex discrimination cases, and pave the way for further legislative progress toward sex and gender equality.

Serve on Gun Violence Prevention LWVIL Position Review Team

LWVRB needs to form a local team to vet the recommendations from the League of Women Voters of Illinois' (LWVIL) Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) study group. The LWV Illinois must ensure that we have wide consensus across the state before implementing any position changes, and no position updates can be made without local consensus.

The group will be responsible for researching the merits of consensus questions. The questions have been approved for study by the LWVIL Board. Members of the study group will educate our wider membership about the pros and cons of the study questions to help them form a consensus on whether the position changes should be made.  [A study document with helpful resources will also be provided by LWVRB.] The time commitment for service on this team will depend on the number of volunteers, as there are 25 questions to evaluate. Because we are targeting no more than 3-5 questions per volunteer, the commitment is estimated to be 5-8 hours of study and preparation and another few hours to deliver presentations at a local meeting.

If you're interested in serving on the team, please send your contact information to Barb at Barbrendall@sbcglobal.net. No prior GVP expertise is required. We need to complete our review by February 2025. Jim McGrath, LWVIL Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Issues Specialist, is available to meet with review teams via Zoom at their convenience to discuss the task and answer any questions. Our participation will shape the League's stance on this important issue.

In 2024, between Jan 1 and Oct 23, 6.2 million voters turned to VOTE411. We have our eyes on April.
