Staff Highlight: Madeline Savage
We're excited to welcome back our former After Care Specialist, Madeline Savage! She is returning to Gardner for afternoon school support and as a first-call substitute teacher. Madeline grew up in Vancouver, WA, attending Union High School where she thrived academically and athletically on the varsity volleyball team. She's a natural educator. Her fondness for teaching grew from working with youth during her time at Sound Experience, a unique learning organization that operates an historic schooner sailing ship. She formalized her education credentials at IslandWood, completing a Graduate Program in Education for Environment and Community in partnership with the University of Washington.
Madeline still loves sports, hiking, and spending time with her two labs and terrier. We're thrilled to have her back at Gardner, where she brings a valuable perspective informed by rich experience.

Parking Lot Safety Reminder
Our parking lot is busier than ever as we host FROGS meetings, parent coffee socials, teacher meetings, extra curricular events, and more. We have had a few fender benders and near-misses recently, so please stay safe and remember the following safety points when parking at Gardner!
- Drive Slowly! Children move quickly and unexpectedly, please keep your speed down even when the parking lot seems clear.
- Do not allow children to walk across the parking lot alone; if you want to drop off or pick up K-6 students without parking, please pull up to the striped loading zone by the flagpole, or park on the East end of the lot and have children walk along the gravel path outside the chain link fence.
- Use the crosswalk to cross from the center garden area to the school.
- Our parking lot is one-way. Enter via the concrete easement at the south of the property, proceed to the mailboxes and turn left into the parking lot. You may also turn left just before the garden when parking in the gravel lot, or when you wish to park in the spots just outside the farmhouse.
- Be extra cautious any time you are backing up in our lot, as space is tight and cars are arriving and leaving continuously at peak times.
- Parking is available along 50th at the edge of our property and down to the corner of Smith-Root (except by the hydrants), which can be useful during events.
- Be sure your lights are on and watch carefully for pedestrians! We are working on repairing and adding lights in our parking area, but our lot is very dark this time of year, especially during Before and After Care.

Mazama Learns About the Post Office
Mazama postmasters initiated a special classroom project, creating postcards that would be sent to their homes. The cards, with a watercolor-painted picture on the front, a message section, an address, and actual postage, are not just for communication but also for active participation. The pre-production phase involved screening post office learning videos and engaging in in-class discussions about the function and inner workings of the post office, making the project an exciting interactive learning experience.
