LOOKING BACK:
OPEN DAY AT VICTORIA HALL
In mid-September, the Club made a major contribution to the Heritage Open Day at Victoria Hall. We offered visitors three simultaneous PowerPoint presentations on aspects of Saltaire’s story, two of which focused on the history of the Saltaire Club and Institute. They proved very popular. We had at least 150 visitors – and most of them chose to see at least two presentations, leaving great reviews.

There’s now an opportunity to see either or both of The Backstory to the Saltaire Club and Institute and The Story of the Victoria Hall Conversaziones. Simply paste a link into your browser, enjoy and learn.

NEW RESEARCH ON TITUS SALT'S PHILANTHROPY
Amazing researcher Colin Coates has taken another look at Titus Salt’s renowned philanthropy. "One of [Salt’s] most celebrated traits" is what Barlo and Shaw said in their 2003 book Balgarnie's Salt with commentary and additions by Barlo and Shaw. They listed 44 gifts and estimated that the total value (at the time) was "approx.£139,000". They warned that their list "should not be regarded as complete".

Using digitised newspaper archives, Colin has identified 269 gifts with an original value of nearly £170,000. At today's prices, this represents more than £16,000,000!

Colin’s work is available on the Club’s website: https://www.saltairehistoryclub.org/research-publications#salts-philanthropy

LOOKING AHEAD #2:
MARCH MEETING - JONATHAN GLYDE
Portrait of Jonathan Glyde
It’s some time away, but put it in your diary. The Club’s March 2025 meeting will focus on...Jonathan Glyde.

‘Nivver ‘eard of ‘im!’?
That’s why the Club has asked Janet Senior to tell us his story at 7.30pm on that evening. And there’s a good chance she’ll also introduce us to his younger brother, William Evans Glyde.

‘Nivver ‘eard of ‘im either!’?

OK: so that’s two really good reasons for coming along in March… and a third is that it’s the Club’s AGM, starting at 7.00.
