Volunteering 101

Are you interested in getting involved in a service activity, but are not quite sure where to start?  Then come to Volunteering 101, a short workshop on volunteerism, how to find service opportunities, and how to make the most your experience.  For questions, contact Collin Paschall.

CEO Student Staff Positions 2012-2013
Applications Due Friday, February 10

The Civic Engagement Office is hiring!  We have several student staff work-study positions open for 2012-2013.  With most of our staff graduating, we are looking forward to building a new team to work with our programs across campus.  Student staff lead Lunch Buddies, Middle School Mentoring, Colleges Against Cancer, Alternative Spring Break, and our volunteer coordination efforts.  Applications are due on February 10.  To learn more, contact Kara Trebil.

Relay for Life Kickoff
February 16, 11:00-1:00, OC  

Colleges Against Cancer is gearing up for the Relay for Life Kickoff!  Team sign-up will be available, as well as information about fundraising and organizing for the event.  There will also be fun activities, food, music, and much more!  Join us as we prepare for another great Relay for Life.  For questions, contact Taylor Koch or Andrew Kinn.

Scholarship for Outstanding Volunteers
Applications Due March 2

Leaders in Volunteerism is a professional network of volunteer managers in the Cedar Rapids area.  It is offering a $500 scholarship for an outstanding student who demonstrates a sincere appreciation for and involvement in community volunteerism.  For application information, contact the Civic Engagement Office.

Civic Engagement Minor
Now Available!  

Are you interested in earning a formal credential demonstrating your commitment to public service?  If so, consider the Civic Engagement Minor.  Approved for the first time this year, the Civic Engagement Minor is a six-course minor with an applied service requirement.  The College has established the minor requirements, available at http://www.cornellcollege.edu/catalogue/current/courses-of-instruction/civ.shtml.  For more information, contact John Gruber-Miller. 

Volunteer Opportunities

Matthew 25, a neighborhood services and economic development nonprofit in Cedar Rapids, has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available, ranging from working on its urban farm to working as a music mentor to helping develop its website.  For more information, visit www.hub25.org or email at info@hub25.org. 

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore is revamping its facility in Cedar Rapids, and has an immediate need for volunteers to help with the project.  For more information, contact Jill Behrens at jill_restore@cvhabitat.org or 319-294-1500.

Legion Arts, a performing arts organization in Cedar Rapids, is looking for volunteers to help with stage lights and sounds, as well front of house jobs.  As an added benefit, students get to see world class shows for free!  For more information, contact Taylor Bergen at taylor@legionarts.org.

Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon is looking for two volunteers to play euchre or pinochle with its residents on Monday or Tuesday night each week from 6:30 to 7:30.  For more info, contact the Civic Engagement Office.

Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids is looking for students interested in working in an after school program from 4:00-5:00pm, as well as a student interested in designing its newsletter.  For more info, contact Pastor Willy Mafuta at w.mafuta@mchsi.com.

VISTA Corner


The Missouri House of Representatives recently passed a resolution commending AmeriCorps members that were instrumental in the recovery efforts following the Joplin, Missouri tornado.  One of our ASB trips this year will be contributing to this work.  To read the news release, check out this entry from the National Service Blog
