Building Community and Support: A Day in the Life of TLC’s Client Services Team Members

At TLC, creating a community of care goes beyond supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It’s about fostering strong relationships with families and empowering staff to provide the best care possible. Behind the scenes, TLC’s Client Services team, led by Emily Farina, plays a critical role in making this happen. We recently caught up with Emily Farina and Leslie Byrd, the team’s Family and Client Specialist, to chat about their unique roles at TLC.

As Service Operations Manager, Emily streamlines processes to ensure efficiency in TLC’s therapy department. From scheduling assessments to providing administrative support, her work allows staff to focus on direct care. “It really is a family,” Emily says. “Our processes are built to support both clients and staff, ensuring everyone feels valued.”

Leslie, TLC’s Family and Client Specialist, bridges the gap between families and staff in TLC’s residential programs. She handles administrative tasks such as medication updates and annual forms, giving Direct Support Professionals more time to focus on clients. “My work helps lighten the load for frontline staff so they can prioritize care,” Leslie shares.

Together, Emily Farina and Leslie Byrd, as well as two additional team members, Leslie Beideman, Clinical Intake Coordinator, and Abby Watson, Interpreter/Administrative Support, embody TLC’s mission-driven culture—one rooted in kindness, intentionality, and growth. At TLC, every client and staff member are seen, supported, and empowered to thrive. This is the heart of TLC’s community of care.

December and the holiday season is a time of giving and generosity. For philanthropic donors who prefer to make a gift before 2024 closes, below is a guide to year-end donation dates. Thank you to our incredible impact community for the difference you have and continue to make in 2024-2025.

  • Credit card gifts made online or by phone must be completed by Dec. 31, 2024.

  • Checks sent via the U.S. Postal Service must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2024.

  • Checks sent via carriers such as UPS, FedEx and DHL must be physically received on or before Dec. 31, 2024.

  • On the other hand, a check from an IRA that is meant to qualify for the charitable IRA “rollover,” or qualified charitable distribution (QCD) must actually clear the account by December 31.

  • Year-end gifts of appreciated stock should be made by Dec. 20, 2024, so your broker has time to transfer the stocks and the receiving broker has time to value the stocks. (Do not sell the stock first, or you will be taxed on the gain!)

Support Igniting Hope Together: A Place to Call Home

We have completed Phase 1 of the modernization of the residential section of our 9-acre campus—our new residential home, which will prioritize care for our most medically fragile clients—and are embarking on Phase 2: the renovation of two existing residences to create a new “Residents Village.”
