Here is your update for December 11, 2024,

As the holiday season approaches and we inch closer to the end of the year, we would like to remind all OLLI members of a few important updates.

First, please note that Emory University and the OLLI Office will be closed from December 24, 2024, to January 1, 2025. During this time, our team will be taking a much-needed break to recharge and enjoy the holidays.

From now until the end of the year, we enter a slower period for our program. While we do have some presentations and classes scheduled, this time is often used for catching up on administrative work and taking personal vacation days, us taking the time for our doctor appointments, dentist, etc. However, this is also an important period for our registration process as we prepare for the upcoming year.

Why do we mention this?
We kindly ask you to take the time now to review and register for our January classes. Early registration helps us ensure that we can accommodate all students and allows us to better plan for classroom assignments, instructor preparation, and necessary technology. Additionally, our team is available to assist you with registration if you call us by December 23rd. While you can wait until the first week of January to register, please note that this is when we will be deciding which classes will move forward. On occasion, if an instructor sees low registration, they may choose to close their class.  All of our classes and information can be found on the
OLLI at Emory website. Please review below for information on upcoming classes, we have so many interesting things to discover!

Reminder: Film Group Discussion with Scott Phillips – This Friday!

Just a quick reminder about this Friday's Film Group discussion with Scott Phillips. We will be meeting in a classroom at OLLI, or you can join us via Zoom from the comfort of your own home.

Topic: OLLI Film SIG Meeting Time: Friday, December 13, 2024, 12 - 1PM

This discussion is more than just talking about the films you’ve watched—it's an opportunity to learn so much about filmmakers, international films, and the history behind directors and the filmmaking process. Scott has opened our minds and eyes to films we might never have discovered on our own, enriching our understanding of the art of cinema. It’s just another way to engage your mind in a new activity at OLLI, while deepening your appreciation for film. We look forward to seeing you there, either in person or virtually! Scott Phillips

Search for an American Sound

Instructor: Emanuel Abramovits
Tues., Jan 14 - Feb 04, 2025
9:30AM - 11:00AM

Watch this short video of instructor Emanuel Abramovits about his upcoming online course. Since the 1890s, when Americans were beginning to develop their own traditions in classical music, composers have recognized the dilemma of creating the American sound. We'll explore how not only classical musicians, but also Broadway and Hollywood composers of different origins and ethnicities alternated in creating a sound that has been defined as evocative of these lands and its people. Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, William Grant Steel, Florence Price, Alex North, Elmer Bernstein and others will be the protagonists of this lecture, supported with audiovisuals and anecdotes.
Bio: Emanuel Abramovits is a Mechanical Engineer with an MBA and has been a concert promoter since 2000, directly involved in many events by international artists, like Itzhak Perlman, Gustavo Dudamel, Sarah Brightman, Roger Hodgson, ASIA, Journey, Kenny G and many more. He designed and staged many original orchestral events, including an Event of the Year winner and several world premieres. He served as the Cultural Director at UNION ISRAELITA DE CARACAS from 2008 to 2019, releasing books, organizing film cycles, concerts and art exhibits. He has been consistently teaching online and in presence across the US since 2020.
