December 2024

The holiday season is officially upon us. As we look forward to the celebrations ahead, we want to share updates and reminders to close out 2024. Let’s continue to steer towards a safe, happy holiday season together.

 Qualified Veteran Discount Program (QVDP)

In November, we celebrated Veteran’s Day by honoring the heroes who have served our country. Under Texas law, toll authorities are allowed to offer discounted or waived tolls for certain classes of veterans—disabled veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and Legion of Valor or Medal of Honor recipients. The board members and staff of the Mobility Authority honor and appreciate the service of the women and men of our military forces and offer the Qualified Veteran Discount Program to qualified veterans. The program allows qualified veterans with an active electronic toll tag to drive toll-free on 183A Toll, 290 Toll, the 71 Toll Lane, 45SW Toll, and 183 Toll. Veterans must meet eligibility requirements and apply for the program in advance.

Staying Safe This Holiday Season

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. As we continue the holiday celebrations and move through the month of December, we encourage everyone to prioritize safety on the roads and commit to driving sober during this season of celebration.

Did you know?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired driving presents a significant risk during December:

  • Between 2018 and 2022, 4,759 lives were lost in alcohol-related crashes during this month.

  • In December 2022 alone, 1,062 fatalities occurred.

  • Nighttime driving is particularly dangerous—nearly 45% of drivers involved in fatal crashes between midnight and 2:59 a.m. were impaired.

Safety Tips for the Season

  • Plan Ahead: Designate a sober driver or schedule a taxi/rideshare service before consuming alcohol.

  • Stay Alert: Keep your eyes on the road at all times, and if you encounter an impaired driver, contact local law enforcement and leave space between your vehicle and theirs.

  • Be a Good Friend: Take the keys away from anyone who attempts to drive impaired and help them get home safely.

By making responsible choices, we can help make the holiday season safer for everyone.
