Water for Life International Art Exhibition graphic
WATER FOR LIFE INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION
October 5, 2024 - January 5 2025

The Niagara Falls History Museum is hosting the Ninth Edition of the "Water for Life" International Art Exhibition, which allows the community to explore the international issue of access to safe drinking water and the effect of climate change through a collection of thought-provoking artwork.

The art exhibition, curated by the artist and Niagara Falls resident Antoine Gaber, is organized in collaboration with the Museum and international cultural promoter & art event coordinator Angelina Herrera. The exhibition showcases the artists and their works and raise awareness about the need for clean water for everyone, both now and in the future.

The artworks on display represent a variety of media, all revolving around the theme of water. The choice of Niagara Falls as the location for the exhibition is fitting, as it serves as a reminder that a significant portion of the world's population still lacks access to clean water. At the same time, the City symbolizes the abundance of fresh water and its importance in our daily lives.

Navy Island coloured print

"NAVY ISLAND"
Coloured Print of Navy Island (from the Canadian side), L983.D.020.006

... "Navy Island was occupied by William Lyon MacKenzie’s Rebels on December 1837, and the forces grew to possibly as many as 1500 soldiers at its peak. Mackenzie, the leader of the rebels, was an advocate of responsible government and was strongly opposed to the Family Compact. Failing in his attempts to peacefully reform the government, he took up arms, but lost during a confrontation with Colonel James FitzGibbon (of War of 1812, Battle of Beaverdams fame), at Montgomery's Tavern, north of Toronto.

Barely escaping capture, Mackenzie and his supporters fled to Buffalo, where they armed themselves with cannons and military supplies, and set up a base on Navy Island on December 13, 1837. American authorities intervened and insisted that the rebels return the military supplies which they had taken from the Buffalo arsenal. The "Patriots," as the rebels called themselves, left the Island on January 14, 1838, but not before the burning of the American steamboat, the Caroline, by Canadian soldiers." ...
