President’s Corner

by Regena Boyland

Happy New Year 2025!

It’s hard to believe that another year has gone by but here we are in 2025! A new year brings new opportunities, new beginnings and a time of reflection. I look forward to the new and exciting things SIS has in store for this new year but want to acknowledge the recent hard work of a few club members/committees as we say goodbye to 2024.

We recently held our annual See’s Candy Fundraiser, to raise money for scholarships, which took a lot of planning and collaboration. Big thanks to all club members (and friends) who set-up and took down store, purchased and sold candy. Special thanks to Co-chairs, Andria Foydl and Karen Smith for organizing, taking the lead in coordinating this event and going above and beyond in their efforts to ensure its success.

Our Hospitality Committee organized a great holiday social which was well attended by SIS members. It was really nice to socialize, enjoy great food & drink and catch up with fellow SISfriends. Thank you, Co-chairs, Rosalie Gladden and IdelleClaypool, for leading the charge.

Once again SIS, you came together to help make the lives of others a little brighter this holiday season by donating/purchasing gifts for the Gifts From The Heart program for foster care children.  Thanks to the Project Selection Committee and chair, Kathy Platz for coordinating this activity.

Some of the important functions within our club must be done on a regular basis and require consistent attention to ensure the smooth operation of our club business. While I appreciate the contributions of all SIS members, I’d like to especially highlight several members and committees who perform these tasks for every meeting (at least monthly) to keep things flowing. Kudos to Laurie Norris for handling lunch meeting RSVPs; Secretary, Mary Wordlaw, for preparing meeting notes and minutes; Glorian Mengelkoch/Karen Smith for developing the monthly Newlestter; Hospitality Committee for ensuring room set-up and Thought for the Day; SOLT Committee, chaired by Mary Locke, for coordinating SOLT speakers; Treasurers, MInisha Trivedi & Idelle, for overseeing the collection of money at meetings. Without dedicated SIS members to perform these tasks, keeping things running smoothly would not be possible.

As you can see, SIS, your contributions over the past four months have a big impact on advancing our mission. Thank you all for your teamwork and dedication! I wish each and every one of you a blessed new year! Let’s move forward in 2025 to continue the great work we do for our community!

Remembering Georgia Presnell

  Long-time SIS member and Friend

By Regena Boyland

Last month, at 105 years old, we lost a dear friend and long-time member, Georgia Presnell, the oldest past president of Soroptimist International of Sacramento (SIS). Georgia served as our president in 1982 and continued her contact with SIS after she moved to Utah several years ago, where she found a local club there during her last few years. Current SIS member, Nancy Wolford Landers, sent Georgia our newsletter every month so she could stay up to date on SIS activities.

In an interview with past president Phyllis McMaster Moist, on August 25, 2022, Georgia shared memories of SIS during her presidency (SIS Newsletter – issued September 2022). Highlights from this article include Georgia’s involvement with leading the Men’s Day Luncheon, attended by 35 men, as an outreach effort to businesses and corporate heads for sponsorship. She also reminisced about the Cadillac Dinner Dance with 600 attendees during her year as president. The John Skinner Orchestra provided the dance music and Mr. Sacramento himself, Stan Atkinson, was the co-host. She also shared fond memories of the Camellia Hat luncheons (she won the hat contest 7 years in a row!), fashion shows, and Christmas boutiques. She hosted members at her home where they made Christmas ornaments to sell at the Christmas Boutique. Georgia was a very active and proud member of SIS.

A few SIS members share the following memories of Georgia:

Georgia loved these photos and was so proud that I included them in our presentation.  She called me one of her special people.  Mary Kobane and I have dibs on her shoes! (Kathy Platz)

I remember when Georgia was President in the 1980’s we had the Cadillac dinner dance, the ticket ($150 each) to the dinner included a chance to win a Cadillac. It was a great chance for ballroom dancing to John Skinner’s orchestra and was a very elegant affair. Georgia and her husband were dedicated ballroom dancers and I think that is what made her legs so lovely and contributed to her long life! (Nancy Wolford Landers)

Perfect makeup, beautifully dressed, amazing jewelry and the highest of heels! Always a smile and so kind.  I remember on her 100th birthday the media came to our meeting to recognize Georgia. He encouraged her to sit down and she told him she was fine standing. She lifted her leg and asked him if he had seen her heels! (Mary Locke)

Always wore high heels and moved like the ballroom dancer she was. (Barbara Coulam)

I remember when Georgia purchased her FIRST pair of tennis shoes (I think she was 95) so she could race with Lance Armstrong 90% of Club tried to talk her out of the race. The Mayor of Davis set up a stationary bike for her at the finish line. (Pat Canterbury)

Georgia was responsible for the entertainment at our Edible Garden Tour where each house had a small group of musicians performing. I was collecting tickets at one of the homes and I remember when Georgia pulled up in her Cadillac, dressed to the nines in heels. She practically ran to the backyard to ensure that all was going well with the musicians and she was doing the same at each of the five homes.  I was amazed by her energy as she was close to 100 years old at this time. (Karen Smith)

I met Georgia when I joined SIS eight years ago. Georgia was always very friendly and fashionably dressed, including her heels.

As you can see, Georgia made a significant contribution to our club. She leaves a legacy of living life to the fullest. What a remarkable woman! She will truly be missed.

Georgia Presnell (June 7, 1919 – December 14, 2024)

May you rest in peace

See’s Fundraising Success!

We had another successful fundraising effort with our See’s Store in the Lake Crest Village Center during the month of December. We were fortunate to have access to the same space as last year, and since it was familiar, it was easy to set up and decorate. It looked amazing!

Besides raising funds for our Dream programs, several people may be interested in membership and we are following up with them. Karen met a woman who was a member of a Soroptimist club in her home country, Fij.  One of our scholarship recipients from several years ago came in and expressed her gratitude for the help of SIS. Another woman remembers getting a monetary award while in junior high school in her hometown. Soroptimist is making a difference in so many places!

A big thank you to all members who worked shifts and/or bought candy. We couldn’t have done it without you. All shifts filled up easily, and we even had some ‘friends of SIS’ help out.

Thanks to Andria Foydl, who co-chaired with Karen, sent reminder emails out and worked a bunch of shifts, opened/closed the store on many occasions and helped with set-up and takedown

It truly takes a village! Beside working shifts, the people below are those who went the extra mile. They helped with set-up, donated decorations and other needed items, created the signage for the store, picked up and dropped off items from storage, opened and closed the store, put up the large See’s sign visible from the street, and helped with the takedown.

We didn’t quite sell out but we were close. We opened on Christmas Eve, and there were many last minute shoppers who were happy to see those beautiful red boxes.

After expenses, we should clear at least $10,000. The final figure will be shared in January.

Thanks again for all of your support!

January 17 Speaker Meeting

Guests from Community Against Sexual Harm (CASH)

Sawan Vadan, Executive Director and

Atoria Foley, Anti Trafficking Case Manager

CASH was created by Sacramento Police officers, survivors, professors, Oak Park residents, and a business district in response to an increase in exploitation and trafficking activity and the futile cycle of arrests, re-arrests, and imprisonment.  A needs assessment identified a “safe and non-judgmental” space where women could receive support, referrals, food, and access to basic care.  As a result, Community Against Sexual Harm (CASH) was created in 2008.

Sawan and Atloria will talk about the impact of CASH on our community and how women are supported because of their efforts. SI Sacramento provided CASH with $10,000 as a Blanche Edgar/Shirley Godfrey project last spring. They used the money to build showers for women to use during the day.

Holiday Party

The hospitality committee hosted a delightful holiday party filled with festive charm. The venue, Brickland Restaurant and Bar, was beautifully decorated with twinkling lights and seasonal greenery, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Guests enjoyed a delicious spread of savory appetizers and sweet treats. What a perfect celebration of the season.  Happy Holidays!

December SOLT

(Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training)

At the December 6th Business Meeting, Phyllis McMaster Moist and Idelle Claypool presented an interesting SOLT about civility. They attended a session at the SNR Development Retreat in August.

10 Simple Things You Can Do (and Not Do) to

Practice Civility, Respect and Inclusion with Members

Here are the highlights:

Things to Start to Do More Often:

  1. Look for reasons to compliment others.
  2. Take a personal interest in your peers.
  3. Give others your undivided attention when talking to them.
  4. Ask others for their ideas and opinions.
  5. Look for ways to validate others.
  6. Make time to welcome new members.

Things to Stop:

  1. Do not participate in gossip.
  2. Don’t be a bully.
  3. Stop thinking that you’re right about everything.
  4. Don’t lose your temper

All good advice and things that we can work on in our everyday lives as well.
