Epiphany by Walter Brueggemann
On Epiphany day, we are still the people walking. We are still people in the dark, and the darkness looms large around us, beset as we are by fear, anxiety, brutality, violence, loss— a dozen alienations that we cannot manage.
We are — we could be — people of your light. So we pray for the light of your glorious presence as we wait for your appearing; we pray for the light of your wondrous grace as we exhaust our coping capacity; we pray for your gift of newness that will override our weariness; we pray that we may see and know and hear and trust in your good rule.
That we may have energy, courage, and freedom to enact your rule through the demands of this day. We submit our day to you and to your rule, with deep joy and high hope.

| | | It may be January and many a tree will have gone to the composter, and the bulletin anticipates Monday’s Epiphany, but we’re also still in the Christmas season! Sunday marks the 12th day of Christmas, which means Christmas music. That said, our sequence hymn, ‘O sisters too’ recalls the Holy Innocents killed by Herod, which we observe on December 28 and we end with ‘We three kings’ which is the signature hymn of the Feast of the Epiphany.
Mark is still with his family in Pennsylvania, so there is no offertory anthem by the choir. We will all sing the offertory, “The First Nowell.” So bring a good voice and celebrate with us.

| | | | | | Thank you to Beth, Joel/Anna, Natalie, Adeleni, Rose, driver Adam, Rep Arturo and his upcoming replacement Yahaira. Arturo said there was a problem today with their computers and could not sent out reminders to our regular clients. That, plus the rain and many possibly thinking we would not have the distribution this close to Christmas, only 28 families/80 individuals came tonight. That's less than half of our usual count!
Nonetheless, spirits were high and seasonal music was blaring. "Merry Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" were in the air! Adults received candy in the wonderful cloth bags made by Sue Hunt and children got candy in paper bags. Notes were enclosed that said, "Have a happy and blessed holiday! With love and good wishes from the volunteers for the REFB and St Patrick's Church" in English and Spanish. The remaining candy will be given at our next distribution on Jan 13.
Father Mack Olsen was also there, meeting volunteers, helping clients and speaking fluent Spanish! Everyone was glad to meet our new priest and see him participating in this important ministry of St Pat's.
Jan 13 volunteers are Pam, Ned and Erin G. Can one more help? And, if you can, please let me know any other upcoming 2nd and 4th Mondays you can volunteer.
May you all have a prosperous 2025.

| | From Rev. Carol: Wise Women Also CameAn Epiphany Meditation |
| |
Wise women also came. The fire burned in their wombs long before they saw the flaming star in the sky.
They walked in shadows, trusting the path would open under the light of the moon.
Wise women also came, seeking no directions, no permission from any king. |
| They came by their own authority, their own desire, their own longing.
They came in quiet, spreading no rumors, sparking no fears to lead to innocents’ slaughter, to their sister Rachel’s inconsolable lamentations.
Wise women also came, and they brought useful gifts: water for labor’s washing, fire for warm illumination, a blanket for swaddling.
Wise women also came, at least three of them, holding Mary in the labor, crying out with her in the birth pangs, breathing ancient blessings into her ear.
Wise women also came, and they went, as wise women always do, home a different way. -Jan Richardson
