Sharing Sacred Spaces
at the Chicago Temple
77 W. Washington Street
Sunday, February 19, 2-4pm
The Chicago Temple, otherwise known as the First United Methodist Church, will open its doors to the general public as well as to visitors from other religious and spiritual communities on Sunday, February 19, 2012 between 2-4pm.
This event is the fifth installment of the Sharing Sacred Spaces project, in which eight different communities of faith and practice in Chicago are inviting others in for an opportunity to observe, experience and learn what makes their space sacred.
Come and learn what it means to be the First United Methodist Church in the city of Chicago. See the history of Chicago etched in wood in the communion tables in the sanctuary and in the Chapel in the Sky. The chapel is considered the tallest Christian sacred space in the world. Come and be introduced to their vibrant mission work reaching out to the business people in the Loop, after school tutoring program serving children of the Ruben Salazar Bilingual Center and their ministry to the families of the nameless who have died in Chicago. The Chicago Temple provides a place of rest and comfort to any seeking it. The sanctuary is open from 7:30am til 9:00pm for this purpose.
Come and see the distinctive decoration on the sanctuary walls. Come touch the brass angel that invites you to take steps upwards. Experience the art gallery on the second floor. Be at peace in Dixon chapel where Taize services are held.
Enjoy this congregation’s hospitality and start up a conversation. Bring questions, engage with others.
The doors will be open. Come on in!
