JANUARY 2025 NEWSLETTER
A Word from our Chief Executive Officer, Mark A. Smith

With a new year upon us, the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts is looking forward to a vibrant and very busy 2025. In 2015 when Joe Campus, Peter Daley and I met at Rego’s Restaurant, the simple, easy goal was to get the band back together for a “Coaches” reunion concert. Little did any of us know, as we head into the 10th Anniversary, that the MVAA would have seven musical projects, over 150 students taking lessons, and numerous grantors and supporters. Plans are in the works for many more band recordings, concerts in Monongahela, Brownsville, Charleroi, and Monessen, art classes and homeschool sessions. I believe that Joe and Pete would need another cup of coffee to keep up with all the kids and activities. Thank you all! Stay tuned and stay connected.

Looking Forward, Looking Back...

As 2024 comes to a close, we at Mon Valley Academy for the Arts reflect on an extraordinary year of achievements, growth, and community impact. From launching exciting new programs to hosting unforgettable events, none of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors, donors, and volunteers.

This year, MVAA expanded its musical offerings with the debut of our performing arts ensemble under the direction of Lynn Petko, performing Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" at Nemacolin Castle in December, and the formation of Take 5 Brass, a talented brass quintet. Alongside our other vibrant performance groups—TC Jr. Stage Band, VoiceZ on Fire, Regimental Fife & Drum Corps, and the Sam Bill Legacy Band—Take 5 Brass brought inspiring performances to venues across the Mon Valley. We also celebrated the kickoff of our Empower a Rising Star (EARS) scholarship program, providing opportunities to budding artists through the generosity of our incredible donors.

In addition, MVAA made significant strides in preserving local history by unveiling a remarkable public art installation at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South) and planning our new podcast and concert series, both celebrating the legendary musicians of the Mon Valley. The mural, a collaboration with Rivers of Steel’s Creative Leadership Program and artist Atalie Gagnet, honors local music legends such as Sam Bill, Vinnie Colaiuta, Cheryl Hardwick, and others. Funded by The Benedum Foundation, Pennsylvania Council for the Arts’ Creative Communities Project, and an Appalachian Regional Commission POWER grant, the mural stands as a testament to Brownsville’s rich musical heritage. The accompanying podcast and concert series will further educate, inspire, and entertain audiences throughout 2025 and beyond, ensuring these stories and legacies resonate with future generations.

None of our achievements would have been possible without the extraordinary contributions of our corporate sponsors and private donors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to:

Christmas Came Early for MVAA Students

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) proudly announces a generous donation of four new Fender CD-60 acoustic guitars, complete with cases, from Greg Joseph of The Clarks and Main Street Music. Greg Joseph, a celebrated musician and community advocate, personally visited the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South) to deliver the instruments, tour the facility, and learn more about the organization’s work in fostering arts education and musical talent in the Mon Valley.

The guitars will be used in MVAA’s various music education programs, providing students with high-quality instruments to support their learning and creativity.

“We are deeply grateful to Greg Joseph and Main Street Music for this incredible gift,” said Annette Buffer, President of MVAA. “These guitars will serve as a vital resource for our programs, allowing students to grow their musical skills and confidence. Greg’s visit to the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center shows his commitment not only to music but to the young people in our community who will benefit from these instruments for years to come.”

MVAA Vice President Carla Anderton echoed these sentiments, stating, “Greg Joseph’s generosity reflects the spirit of community and collaboration that MVAA strives to promote every day. His willingness to engage with our organization and provide resources for our students underscores the transformative power of music and the arts.”

The visit culminated in a group photo featuring MVAA staff and Greg Joseph, capturing the spirit of partnership and shared enthusiasm for music education.

MVAA thanks Greg Joseph and Main Street Music for their continued support of arts and culture in the Mon Valley. Their donation will inspire future generations of musicians and help MVAA achieve its mission to empower a rising star in every student.

MVAA Receives Grant Funding Awards, Commitments

The Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is proud to announce it has received funding commitments totaling $39,300 from esteemed grantmaking organizations and local businesses to support its 2025 projects, events, and general operations. This financial backing will fuel MVAA’s mission to provide enriching cultural experiences and educational opportunities throughout the Mon Valley region.

The EQT Foundation has generously funded the 2025 MVAA/EQT Summer Music Series, ensuring that this celebrated event continues to bring the community together through live music and cultural celebration.

Additional grants from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (unrestricted funds), the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau (for both marketing and operations), and the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency (marketing) will enable MVAA to undertake several transformative initiatives. These include:

  • Purchasing essential office equipment and supplies to enhance administrative efficiency.

  • Producing a short commercial showcasing MVAA’s programs and offerings.

  • Investing in social media advertising to promote upcoming projects and events.

  • Renovating the downstairs of the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South) in Brownsville to provide a welcoming space for parents during lessons and additional storage for the organization’s growing catalog of musical scores and donated instruments.

In addition to these grants, MVAA gratefully acknowledges the financial support of Somerset Trust Bank, which has funded outdoor lighting to illuminate the recently unveiled "Brownsville Music Legends" mural. The mural, commissioned and funded by Rivers of Steel in 2024, celebrates the region’s rich musical heritage.

Mark Smith, MVAA Founder and CEO, expressed his gratitude for the funding and emphasized its importance to the organization’s mission. “These grants and community support empower us to continue expanding access to the arts while preserving the Mon Valley’s rich cultural legacy. Each dollar invested helps us build a stronger, more vibrant community.”

Annette Buffer, MVAA President, added, “This funding represents a remarkable opportunity to enhance our programs and facilities. It allows us to better serve our students, their families, and the broader community while honoring the incredible generosity of our donors and grantmakers.”

MVAA extends its deepest thanks to the EQT Foundation, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency, Somerset Trust Bank, and Rivers of Steel for their contributions. MVAA in Focus: December Snapshots
Empowering Young Musicians in Monessen

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) proudly partnered with Monessen Communities that Care and SPHS to provide musical instruction to students in the Monessen School District. Many of these students participated through MVAA’s Empower a Rising Star (EARS) scholarship program, which ensures access to quality music education for children and teens who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

Through the EARS initiative, students received instruction from nationally known and classically trained musician, singer/songwriter Gary Antol. Thanks to the generosity of program sponsors, new guitars were provided for students to take home for practice, with additional instruments purchased for use during lessons at school.

Students also had the chance to learn drum and percussion skills from MVAA Founder and CEO Mark Smith, a professional musician and proprietor of Mark’s Drum Shop in Charleroi. The program was supported by the dedicated efforts of Teresa Seh and Eric Manko, Principal of Monessen Elementary School, whose collaboration helped make this initiative a success.

You can help support this transformative program by sponsoring a student or group of students. Your contribution will provide access to professional instruction, instruments, and the resources needed to foster a lifelong love of music. For more information, contact us at info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org or call 724-561-5616.

Together, we’re shaping the next generation of musicians and empowering young stars to shine brightly!

MVAA Theatrical Group Performs "A Christmas Carol"

On Sunday, December 8, the historic Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville transformed into a magical stage for Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. Two captivating performances took place at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., offering audiences a unique blend of history and holiday spirit.

The 30-minute performance took attendees on a narrated journey through the decorated rooms of the castle. As segments of the timeless tale were recounted, vignettes featuring the talented cast brought each scene to life. The immersive experience required guests to climb staircases and traverse the castle grounds, braving the elements to enjoy the storytelling against the backdrop of the festively adorned venue. Audience members were reminded not to touch the castle’s priceless artifacts or capture the experience with photography or video, as the event was professionally filmed. DVDs of the performance will soon be available for purchase through the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA).

The ensemble cast, led by talents such as Talen Bagwell as Ebenezer Scrooge and Greyson Fertal as Bob Cratchit, was joined by a dedicated crew. Director Lynn Petko also served as narrator and scriptwriter, weaving the vignettes seamlessly together. The production featured a mix of seasoned actors and young talents, including Emerys Gabanay as Tiny Tim and Laurel Lindey as the Spirit of Christmas Past. The effort of the cast was complemented by prop assistants, wranglers, and videographer John Skinkis, ensuring the event’s success.

Special thanks were extended to the MVAA, particularly Annette Buffer and SueAnne Antonucci, for providing rehearsal facilities and ongoing support. The Brownsville Historical Society’s Kim and Rocky Brashear also played a vital role, offering the spectacular Nemacolin Castle as the setting for this enchanting performance. The director expressed heartfelt gratitude to the parents of the cast for their behind-the-scenes contributions and to her family for their unwavering encouragement.

The event celebrated not only the holiday spirit but also the artistry of the Mon Valley community. This collaboration between MVAA, the Brownsville Historical Society, and local families created a memorable experience for all who attended. Attendees left the castle with a renewed appreciation for Dickens’ message of compassion and generosity, a fitting sentiment for the season.
