MMofA (UN)SETTLED EVENT TO FEATURE SPECIAL GUESTS: Charles Smith, Gloria Petit-Williams and the Africatown Drummers will be at the Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) on January 18 at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will celebrate MMofA’s exhibition (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art. Smith, a Mobile artist whose work is included in the exhibition, will give an “Art Talk.” Dance instructor Gloria Petit-Williams will lead traditional African Step lessons while the Africatown Drummers, with special guest appearances, perform. There will also be scavenger hunts and art activities for all ages. An (Un)Settled German tour will take place an hour prior to the event.

OWA ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL COMING UP: OWA’s fifth annual Arts & Crafts Festival is taking place on January 25 in Downtown OWA in Foley. The free family-friendly festival will feature local artists, vendors and small businesses showcasing their handmade goods. Those interested in being a vendor may apply here. Their booths will be open between 12 and 6 p.m., and children’s activities will take place between 1 and 5 p.m. There will also be live music on the OWA Island Amphitheater Stage between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. and 4 and 6 p.m.

PNC BECOMES OFFICIAL BANK OF PCP, AZALEA TRAIL RUN: The Port City Pacers (PCP) have announced that PNC Bank will become the presenting sponsor of the Azalea Trail Run as part of a multiyear sponsorship agreement. PNC also will become the official bank of the Mobile-based club and serve as a supporting sponsor for all PCP races throughout the year. Since the first Azalea Trail Run in 1978, the event has continued to welcome runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes annually. The 47th iteration will take place on the morning of March 22. All three running/walking events—the 10K, 5K and 2K fun run—will start and finish near Mardi Gras Park in Downtown Mobile. “We are grateful for the support of PNC Bank for the annual slate of Port City Pacers races, especially the Azalea Trail Run,” said Peggy Olive, Azalea Trail Run 2025 race director. “This sponsorship will help us continue our mission to promote good health and fitness through running and walking activities, while providing community friendly running/walking events….”

AVIATION HIRING EVENT COMING UP: SAWDC AlabamaWorks! and Coastal Alabama Community College (CACC) are hosting an aviation hiring event on January 24 at 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Alabama Aviation Center at 1975 Avenue C in Mobile. The event aims to bring together local businesses, industry leaders and jobseekers to build a skilled workforce in the aviation field and beyond. LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT HATCH: Hatch, a Fairhope-based technology village and entrepreneurial support hub with a goal to support and grow the technology-based entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region, has announced that Keith Glines is its new leader. Rick Miller, director since 2018, will assume the role of senior advisor. Glines joined Hatch in 2024 to oversee strategic partnerships for the accelerator and now, Hatch says, will “bring a fresh perspective to advance the organization’s mission of empowering startups and fostering innovation.” He is CEO of Back Porch Productions, a Fairhope multimedia and publishing company, and hosts The Overlap Podcast, a weekly series that discusses the intersections between work, fitness, family, faith and leadership with the goal of simplifying big business for small business leaders. EOS EVENT COMING TO INNOVATION PORTAL: The EOS Network Resource Group (ENRG), a collective of organizations using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) in Southwest Alabama, has announced a We Run on EOS event at Innovation Portal in Mobile on January 23 at 8 a.m.-noon. Entrepreneurs and business leaders from across the region are expected to attend. They are to gain insights into implementing EOS in their organizations for fostering growth and achieving long-term success. The event will feature keynote presentations from experienced EOS implementers, interactive workshops focusing on running EOS at various stages of growth and networking opportunities with fellow business leaders. BALDWIN COUNTY LEADS STATE IN INCOMING INVESTMENTS: Baldwin County has the highest incoming investment in Alabama, AL.com reported, gleaning data from an annual study by SmartAsset. Baldwin County ranked No. 125 in America with business growth of 13.4%, GDP growth of $1,201, 25.22 new building permits per 1,000 homes and an incoming investment index of 27.72. Ranking No. 10 in the county and No. 807 in America, Mobile County had business growth of 2.8%, GDP growth of $1,733, 5.95 new building permits per 1,000 homes and an incoming investment index of 18.44. SmartAsset is a financial technology company that measures investment in counties across the metrics of business establishment growth, GDP growth and new building permits. The rankings are intended to give residents an inside look into where investments, including business opportunities and infrastructure development, are concentrated in the state.

GULF SHORES CHOOSES AIRPORT MANAGEMENT SERVICER: Aviation program managers Vasey Aviation Group will oversee the management services for the developing two-gate commercial airport in Gulf Shores that will begin hosting Allegiant Air service on May 21, AL.com reports. Vasey, based in St. Petersburg, Florida, was awarded a $150,000 contract by the Gulf Shores City Council through July 2. “They are experts in aviation project management, especially in regard to terminal development projects,” said Jesse Fosnaugh, director of the Gulf Shores Airport Authority. “They will have a full-time presence here in Gulf Shores and drive to completion the many elements necessary to finish a project of this magnitude.” The first Allegiant flights, to Cincinnati and Belleville, Illinois; Great Smoky Mountains National Park/Knoxville, Tennessee; Houston; Bentonville/Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Kansas City, Missouri, are to begin in May after terminal construction is complete.

BALDWIN BONE & JOINT HOSTING COMMUNITY THERAPY EVENT: Baldwin Bone & Joint will host a complimentary “Lunch & Learn” event featuring occupational therapist Taylor Lewis on February 13 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Spanish Fort Senior Center. USA HEALTH CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER NAMED TO NATIONAL LIST: Dr. Michael Chang, system chief medical officer at USA Health and associate vice president for medical affairs, was selected for the Becker’s Hospital Review 2025 list of Chief Medical Officers to Know. Since joining USA Health in 2018, he has spearheaded efforts to improve care access, safety and efficiency, notably establishing a surgical quality program modeled after the American College of Surgeons’ best practices. Under Chang’s guidance, USA Health reduced its serious safety event rate by more than 70%, earning the HX Achievement Award for Serious Safety Event Rate Reduction. He also played a key role in USA Health’s 2023 acquisition of Providence Hospital, managing medical staff and ensuring a smooth transition. During the pandemic, Chang served as USA Health’s chief adviser and public health spokesperson, providing regular updates and leadership. Before joining USA Health, Chang spent 24 years in various roles at Wake Forest Baptist Health, where he served as chief medical officer for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and system chief quality officer for Wake Forest Baptist Health. He was also executive medical director for the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery service line for the health system and a professor of surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Chang received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed his residency in general surgery at UAB and fellowship training in surgical critical care and trauma surgery at Vanderbilt.

PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT, COUNT COMING UP: Mobile’s Housing First, Inc. (HFI) has announced its 2025 Project Homeless Connect event, taking place on January 24 at The Grounds in Mobile. It has taken place each year since 2014 and is made possible by partnerships between HFI and local service providers, organizations and community members. It connects those experiencing homelessness with services including healthcare, legal assistance, housing assistance, veteran’s resources, employment services, hygiene services, clothing, supplies, education, identification and other vital assistance, for free. Free transportation from multiple pickup locations in Mobile and Baldwin counties is provided for all persons experiencing homelessness. Additionally, during the last week of January, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires communities receiving federal funding for homeless programs to conduct a count of those using shelters annually. HFI is asking for individual volunteers and organizations for its annual point-in-time survey, taking place on January 23 in two shifts—day and night. Adult volunteers will conduct brief interviews with willing participants and distribute care packages at known sleeping locations for those experiencing homelessness. BALDWIN COUNTY DECEMBER 2024 REAL ESTATE UPDATE: According to Baldwin REALTORS Multiple Listing Service (MLS) statistics, Baldwin County listings saw an increase in closed sales and average sales prices in December 2024. As an entire county, property sales increased by 97 units. Additionally, the “Resort” properties experienced a 4.5% increase in average sales price at $795,077, while “Traditional Residential” properties increased by 6.7% to $425,624. “Resort” also reported average days on market at 95 days, a 26.7% increase from the previous year. Total properties sold reduced by just three units in this area of the county, resulting in 133 closings during December 2024. However, the submarket also experienced more new listings than the year prior, from 173 properties added in December 2023 to 202 listings added in this past month. “Traditional Residential” saw an average days on market increase of 23 in the year-over-year comparison, going from 49 days in December 2023 to 72 days this past month. 395 properties sold in this area, which was a 100-unit increase from the year prior. The amount of new inventory added this month also increased by 22.9% for the submarket at 381 listings added.

THE OAKS AT MAGNOLIA SPRINGS OPENS: The Oaks at Magnolia Springs has opened at 16000 Beasley Road in Magnolia Springs and plans to host weddings starting in the spring. Owners Randy and Robin Hall, owners of the property, have been improving it since September 2020, shortly after Hurricane Sally damaged many of its live oak and other trees, Gulf Coast Media said. Initially, the Halls saw the 43-acre property as a personal retreat, but they now hope it will be home to weddings, summer camps and other gatherings. The venue's centerpiece, a white wedding pavilion currently under construction, will feature floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase views of the property's lakes and oaks. There will also be an onsite house with bride and groom suites, a private pool and a patio equipped with a fireplace and fire pit for intimate gatherings.

CODY NAMED BAY CITY FITNESS COACH: Bay City Fitness, a gym and physical fitness center at 5616 Old Shell Road in Mobile, recently added Tim Cody as a new bootcamp, performance training and personal training coach. Cody was born in Birmingham but moved to Mobile at a young age and attended Faith Academy, participating in the school’s first Alabama High School Athletic Association football playoff appearance. He attended Faulkner University, where he played football and studied science, sports recreation and fitness. He received his bachelor’s degree in May 2024.
