"The time is always right to do what is right."

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hi all:

We hope you enjoyed the holidays with friends and family, and are now rested and ready to turn back to the critical work ahead. With the anniversary of Jan 6th, the death of Jimmy Carter, and the painfully tragic fires burning in LA, this year is off to a tough start; and that's all before the dreaded swearing in of the most incompetent, hateful and dangerous person this country has ever elected as President.

There is no question that difficult days are ahead. We, along with thousands of grassroots groups around the country, are taking some time to figure out what the right next steps are and how we best work to limit (or at least slow) the anticipated damage this incoming administration will cause. At I-RISE, we're also transitoning to a new leadership team, and we're looking forward to continued productivity, community, and actions as we move to our next chapter. More details will follow in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, there is work to be done now -- things we can do to help stem the rising tide of hate, help vulnerble populations, and make our voices heard. Actions to take today, this week, over MLK weekend, and for the next few weeks are listed in To Do below. We will be back with more!

Onward.

TO DO

Nationwide Call TONIGHT: Challenging Cabinet Nominations

Confirmation hearings for Trump's cabinet picks begin next week. For Trump, this isn't about selecting the best person for the job; it's about appointing MAGA zealots and corporate cronies. It's about entrenching a legacy of corruption, disinformation, and outright abuse of power. He’s handing inner-circle leadership positions to extremists who have no qualifications for these roles and no qualms about using their power to further his authoritarian agenda.

Join a call TONIGHT (Tues 1/4) at 8pm ET with Indivisible National’s founders, Public Citizen, Working Families Party and MoveOn for a mass call to take an in-depth look at the upcoming confirmation hearings and learn how we each can take action. Speakers on the call will explain how these hearings work, what's at stake, and how each of us can work to ensure that our Democratic senators stand firm against the most egregious nominations.

Sign up for here for the call on Tuesday, January 14 at 8pm.

Only a Few More Days to Push for the ERA

The ERA is just one step away from becoming the 28th amendment, requiring only President Biden’s directive for final approval. Yes, this is complicated and will be challenged. But let’s drive this issue to the Supreme Court and have the debate and know exactly where we stand.

As Cady Seaton, a 16 year old local activist, wrote in an appeal about this issue: "The 140th birthday of suffragist Alice Paul, author of the ERA, is January 11 ... [Let's] honor her legacy by finally realizing her dream to secure equal rights for women.... [T]he rights and freedoms of women will be endangered under the new administration, and the time to protect these rights with a constitutional amendment is now."

Here's how to contact Biden NOW:

Honor MLK (and Counter the GOP) By Helping Our Neighbors

January 20th may be the dreaded inauguration day, but it also is MLK Day. Let's follow MLK's comittment to service and demonstrate the power of compassion and action to counter the hateful, divisive agenda that the incoming administration is pushing.

Our Neighbors' Table is a regional food hub for Merrimack Valley families and food pantries, serving virtually all of the communities where I-RISE members live. ONT is always in need of donations of non-perishable food and toiletry items. We are collecting a few of their most needed items, including:

  • Canned soups and meals
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste

Please help us help our neighbors by dropping of donations of these items any time from Friday, January 17 through Friday, January 31 at one of the following locations:

  • Newburyport:
    • 4 Tilton Street (near Anna Jaques; bin by the door at the top of the driveway)
    • 5A Charles St (in the South End; bin by the front door)
  • West Newbury: 4 Sawmill Brook Rd. (bin in the screened porch at the back of the house)
  • Amesbury: 1 Whittier Place (bin on the front porch)
  • Boxford: 59 Great Pond Drive (blue cooler by the garage)
Email indivisible.rise.newburyport@gmail.com with questions about this collection drive or if you'd  like to serve as a drop off location in a different area. We will be collecting everything to make one bulk donation to ONT on behalf of the I-RISE membership.

As MLK once said, "Hate cannont drive out hate. Only love can do that". Let's honor MLK, lean into love and care for our community through this collection drive and as a message of resistance to the hatred and bigotry Trump brings.

Attend a People's March this Saturday

On Saturday, January 18th, thousands of people will gather in Washington, D.C. and across the nation for the People’s March to demand and defend our freedoms against relentless attacks on our communities. Let's demonstrate our collective strength and send a clear message to the incoming administration that no matter what they try, we will continue to choose solidarity, safety, and each other.

If you are ready and able to attend in DC, learn more here about what is sure to be the largest and most publicized march. There also are a few local rallies if you'd like to participate closer to home.

Donate to Help LA Fire Victims

The images and news from friends and family in LA are devastating. Biden is committed to providing federal funding to help with this disaster, but LA will need so much more after he leaves office. Despicably (and not suprisingly), the vindictive next president will do whatever he can to avoid helping that city whose voters did not support him. Let's each do what we can to help.

As always, there are many options for donating and lists of suggestions abound on line. Los Angeles officials are recommending donating to the following vetted charities:

There's also a more extensive list of publshed options here.

If you prefer to donate to a specific individual or family, GoFundMe has set up a dedicated page where you can donate to SoCal fire victims, first responders and others through their separate fundraising accounts.

MEMBER UPDATES

Thanks to our members who independently wrote postcards to get out the vote in lat Tuesday's special elections to fill two open VA state legislature seats. The Democrats won both seats, thereby maintaining a narrow majority in the state Senate.

And thanks to anyone who is writing postcards for a special election for the WI Supreme Court, where it is critical to retain liberal control of that court. You may recall that the election of a liberal judge to that court a couple of years ago tipped the balance of the court and led to imporant decisions on voters' and women's rights in that key swing state.

If you are motivated by recent developments, have some good news to share, or would like to get more involved, please let us know. Indivisble-RISE is completely volunteer run, and we can always use more help organizing and leading our actions, events, programs, and more. Email  indivisible.rise.newburyport@gmail.com with ideas, news, suggestions, and anything you would like to tell or ask us. We'd love to hear from you!
