Happy Tuesday!

It's been almost a month since I have been in your inboxes. And a bunch has happened: we launched a new, all-encompassing podcast for all our shows, including In The Soup, which returned last week after a holiday hiatus; The Friday Nooner had its series finale....

And of course, we entered the "Early Bird" pricing period for our Rising Stars event! Grab that rate (through January 18th) right here

I guess time does fly when you're having fun. And if you couldn't tell, we like to have fun. Let's get into some more!

Keep on tech'ing on,
Kaitlyn

Download: Doss

Monica Doss has been an impactful contributor to the Triangle's entrepreneurial ecosystem for quite some time. Having gone from being CED (Center for Entrepreneurial Development)'s first full-time employee and CEO, to launching her own consulting company that connects entrepreneurship strategies to research and higher education institutions, organizations and communities.

Her ongoing experience in the Triangle is what made her the perfect subject for the latest edition of "The Download"—as always, spearheaded by EisnerAmper's Brooks Malone.

RAPplications Due

📯 *taking the founder summoning bugle from David Schwartz* 📯

This Friday (Jan. 17) is the deadline to apply for RiOT's Accelerator Spring 2025 Program. Some great companies come out of this accelerator, with notable alumni including CareYaya, Acta Solutions, PhiniteMyMatr, and more. And your startup can become part of this list!

'24's Biggest Buy

Readers and Triangle tech enthusiasts (those should go hand in hand) already know that when Raleigh's ShareFile sold for $875M in September of last year, it went down in Triangle history as one of the biggest wins for our growing tech ecosystem.

And now this history marker is official. According to a report by the TBJ, the $875M buyout was the largest M&A deal in the Triangle in 2024, with Pharmacosmos’ buy of G1 Therapeutics trailing behind.

Keyboard Galore

I'm going to pretend that title rhymes because it fits the feeling of what Durham-based Keebio is doing. This company creates split and ergonomic keyboards designed to help those with wrist and shoulder pain (and other wrist-strain injuries).

Taking some inspiration from how Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard helped his mother with her carpal tunnel syndrome, Founder David Nguyen and his keyboards could pave the road for more accessible computers.

Read the full WRAL feature on David and Keebio.

Cydoc Covered

As part of the TBJ's "52 Shades of Success - Impact of AI" series, writer Connie Gentry highlighted the mission of Durham-based Cydoc, an AI-powered startup which aims to reduce physician burnout and improve patient care.

GrepBeat featured Cydoc and Founder Dr. Rachel Draelos—who is the first person to earn both an M.D. and doctorate in computer science from Duke University (and the first TFN guest to do all that)— in this February 2024 profile, where she covered her inspiration and long-term vision for the company.

TBJ's feature covers more of the specific pain points that Cydoc is working to solve.

Small CHIPs

We'll keep mentions about Wolfspeed short, as recent news from the N&O tell of the Durham-based semiconductor company being one of the most-shorted stocks. Too soon?

As of today, Wolfspeed stock dipped below $5, the lowest the price has been since the late 1990s. N&O's Brian Gordon reports that while this is bad news for the company's investors, it’s good news for the many rushing to short the stock and take advantage of the low prices.

Big CHIPs

In other semiconductor news, TBJ reports that MACOM Technology Solutions, which has ties to the Triangle after buying out Wolfspeed's radio-frequency business in 2023, is another company in line to receive funding from the CHIPS Act.

Though it received a smaller amount of funding compared to its competitors ($70M compared to Wolfspeed's $750M), this does speak true to North Carolina's (and broadly, the country's) potential to "develop the most advanced technologies while protecting our national security."

The CHIPS Act has awarded more than $33 billion in proposed incentives funding allocated to date. But how will that change under a new administration that has spoken out against the act? Read the full story here

GrepBook

No, we have not (yet) created our version of a MacBook, but we have wrapped up our January Book Club, and that's arguably as cool.

Last Friday, GrepBeat's Book Club met up at the HQ to break down “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore” by Robin Sloan, which received some largely positive feedback from our growing group of readers. If you're interested in the book, what a typical Book Club meeting looks like, or you're nosy and want to see what our HQ looks like, check out David's recap on the Book Club here
