Food evokes a special kind of magic. It tells a story, draws us together, and sparks connections. This magic has a new home at the Tucson Arizona Vegan Night Market, where the food represents the coming together of a community of curious foodies–vegan and non-vegan alike. The catalyst here is event creator Hannah Hernandez, also known as @deathfreefoodie, who shows that one person’s grassroots vision can truly spark widespread change for animals.

When photojournalist Thomas Machowicz learned of the devastating California wildfires, he drove to Los Angeles to document animal rescue efforts. At two emergency shelters for large animals, he spoke with evacuees who had fled with their horses, sharing stories of resilience amid chaos.

“The sheer power of the Eaton Fire can’t be overstated," Thomas says. 

"When I arrived at 5 AM, high winds were blowing the fire through Altadena, burning streets, toppling trees, and downing power lines. People at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center had spent the night evacuating their horses and were relieved they were safe, but I kept thinking—when the fires end, what will they return to?”

Today his restaurant, Studio Gauthier, aims to bring his vision of animal-free dining to a wider audience by offering delicious plant-based dishes that inspire changes in mindset and lifestyle.The success of Gauthier’s plant-based sushi sparked plans for a new vegan sushi restaurant in London’s upscale Mayfair district, which opened in June of 2024.
