1 February 2025: The Carpentries becomes independent!
On February 1st, The Carpentries will officially be an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation! This is a significant milestone for the organisation and The Carpentries community, and marks the next chapter in our growth and sustainability. We are excited for what this independence will enable us to achieve as we continue to serve our global community.
With gratitude and excitement, Kari L. Jordan & Erin Becker The Carpentries Executive Team |
| | You are Invited: LLMs for Data Science discussion series.
A short series of monthly community discussions on a theme of LLMs for Data Science will be hosted by members of the Curriculum Team and Community Engagement Team in the first quarter of this year, with the potential for further sessions after that.
These are follow-up discussions to the the two community discussions in November last year on Teaching LLM Assistants in Carpentries Workshops, reported on in the two blog posts listed in the next section of this newsletter. The follow-up discussions will provide a platform for community members to share their ideas, experience, questions, and concerns about teaching generative AI methods and tools, and further inform The Carpentries’ strategy in this area.
The sessions will take place as follows:
The sessions are listed on The Carpentries Community Calendar and you can sign up to join these discussions on the community sessions Etherpad.
Please join us! |

| Teaching LLM Assistants in Carpentries Workshops, part 1
Last year, The Carpentries hosted two community discussions on Teaching LLM Assistants in Carpentries Workshops. In Part 1 of 2 blog posts, our Director of Curriculum, Toby Hodges, and our Associate Director, Erin Becker, summarise the main points of discussion and outcomes of those two community sessions. |
| | Teaching LLM Assistants in Carpentries Workshops, part 2
This follow-up blog post on the two community discussion sessions in November on Teaching LLM Assistants in Carpentries Workshops describes our plans to coordinate community effort around curriculum updates/development around this topic. It includes a summary of plans to add new content to existing Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, and Software Carpentry lessons and to coordinate between developers of lessons on AI-related topics in The Carpentries Incubator. |
| | Ending Support for _styles_ in the Incubator
In May 2023, the Workbench replaced our previous lesson infrastructure, a Jekyll-based template affectionately known as styles. Any lesson repositories still using styles in The Carpentries Incubator after the end of this year, 31 December 2025, will be archived. |
