Center for the Human Rights of Children
Recognizing that children require special protections, the Center for the Human Rights of Children was founded at Loyola University Chicago in 2006. The Center pursues an agenda of interdisciplinary research, education, and service to address critical human rights issues affecting children and youth, both locally and globally.
 
The Center represents Loyola University's efforts to protect and advance the human rights of children, engaging students, faculty, and the community at large through research, scholarship, advocacy, and programs.

Save the Date: Children's Rights in Africa

Monday, April 16, 2012

Brigette De Lay, Child Protection Officer for UNICEF and Advisory Board Member of the Center for the Human Rights of Children (CHRC), is scheduled to visit Loyola University Chicago in April, 2012. As a visiting scholar and child rights expert, Ms. Delay will give an evening lecture, titled, "Child Protection in Sub-Saharan Africa: Current trends, challenges and the way forward." Dr. Terry Northcut, Associate Professor in Loyola's School of Social Work and the CHRC's 2011 African Child Rights Fellow, will present preliminary findings from her research project, "Psychosocial Support to Orphan and Vulnerable Children in Ethiopia - An Institutional Perspective."

Spring/Summer 2012 Children's Rights Internship Opportunity

The Center for the Human Rights of Children is seeking two graduate-level interns to assist with a new research project, "Conducting a Legal Services Assessment for Child Trafficking Survivors in Cook County." This internship is an excellent opportunity to work on an issue that has both local and national impact addressing the rights of children.

Building Healthy Homes/Healthy Communities - Tackling Environmental Disparities

In December 2011, the CHRC, in collaboration with the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy, Center for Urban Research and Learning, Loyola University Medical Center, and Loyola Law School’s Civitas ChildLaw Center, received an award to support a new interdisciplinary initaitve addressing disparities resulting from environmental toxins in homes and Communities in Chicago and Cook County. It is an exciting beginning to an initiative that showcases the University’s commitment to cutting-edge environmental issues, our community, public-private partnerships, and interdisciplinary and multi-sector collaboration and research. The CHRC's work on the project will include efforts to better understand the disproportianate impact environmental toxins have on children, and to try to identify solutions from a rights-based approach.

UN Declaration of Human Rights Education and Training
On Monday, December 19, 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations officially adopted the UN Declaration of Human Rights Education and Training. This document recognizes the right of everyone to have access to human rights education. The Declaration names the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the primary basis for this education, and provides an opportunity for people to expand their understanding of fundamental human rights. Poverty, Coercion, and Human Rights Conference
