Greetings friends
Enjoy your entry into the 11th month of the year, Aquarius, a time for hopes, dreams, and wishes to come true. And as we observe Holocaust Remembrance Day, let us light a candle for the six million martyrs and demand that never again finally be never again. And let us hope the drip, drip, drip of hostage release becomes one great freedom for the almost 100 still languishing in the pits of despair.
This week, we have reached the beginning of the long road to freedom – for hostages, all taken against their will, and for the most unique generation in history, the wilderness generation that we are beginning to read about as we get ready for the Year of the Snake, a creature more in tune with mother earth than any other, always connected to her heartbeat and rhythm, and who sheds its skin and grows a new one in its constant state of transformation and growth.
We crossed a line last week when we began this new book, so different from the others. We were told it is the Book of Names. This did not necessarily mean a lot as we are focused on its English name of “Exodus,” which emphasizes the escape from slavery, but the underlying meaning behind the Book of Names will as we read further. Everyone knows Moses, which was not his real name, the Pharoah, whose name we never really know but think we do, only from the movie, and G0d, whose name we are not supposed to know. The others are minor players whose names we don’t care about, but names define things; names define the world.
This week we find out a little bit more about Moses and Aaron and drift back to a magic aura of events, and G0d introduces himself to the world with the most powerful calling card of all time, still reverberating to this day as we begin reading about the plagues of Egypt that still plague us today.
You will also now get your first glimpse—your first inkling, your first hint at a promised land. You know what—you have a promised land. We all do.
We think of the exodus, and we think of three things. Like a great book, play, or film, they serve as an introduction, climax, and finale. They are the plagues—the calling card of G0d as his method of introduction, the splitting of the Red Sea—the demonstration that there is a way forward when your back is to the wall as long as you have faith—and the giving of the Ten Commandments, simple rules for life and harmonious co-existence.
You could do an entire book on those three things, and we live those three things throughout our lives.
We discover that the dominant theme of Exodus, the Lord’s becoming known, is explicitly connected here to the rescue from treatment and to the “judgments” that will occur in Egypt. It will continue to be stated several times as a reason for the miraculous plagues. It was not to punish the Egyptians or end slavery.
It is about G0d’s great calling card to man and a reminder that we can make bricks without straw. We spend much of our lives making bricks without straw. Your doubts and fears keep you in slavery; you face a situation that seems hopeless. What can you do? Finding a way, persevering, overcoming—my friends, is making bricks without straw. But even when things seem dark, God makes a way where there is no way! That is faith. That is one of the great lessons in this book.
Let us now free ourselves from the tyrants of negative thinking. We have been slaves to doubts, fears, and apprehension; let us be delivered as Moses delivered the Children of Israel; let us come out of the Land of Egypt, the land of constraint, out of the House of Bondage.
G0d’s introduction to the world is via the plagues of Egypt. He had said how, when, why, and what. None of it had to do with punishing the Egyptians for their treatment of anyone or for a world of slavery. But if you took a poll, almost everyone would say that was the reason. And all these plagues are not long-ago events but current. They still occur in our lives. This week, we see the first seven:
Blood contains the life force of man through which our souls, our ki, our nefesh, our ruach flows.
Frogs are a nuisance.
Lice are bloodsuckers and pests and disturb.
Beasts are the swarming mob that can sweep you up as either a victim or a member.
Pestilence is a plague that kills and destroys the food supply and has social implications.
Boils are another form of disease, but this one brings discrimination because it is about what you see and judge.
Hail was a destructive force that wiped out whatever food supply was left.
Next week, we will see the final three. To many, they are the true big three, although the ones from this week left Egypt bereft.
