BSCA's 2025 Distinguished Speaker
Dr. Elizabeth (Dori) Tunstall, author of Decolonizing Design: A Cultural Justice Guidebook (MIT Press 2023) will host an interactive careshop on creating a pathway to liberatory joy by embracing decolonial practice. The ability to say "no" to that which might harm us defines the space of liberation. Joy is the deep connection to self, others including our environments, and a higher purpose. Tunstall will facilitate a three-hour process that helps people (1) identify the things to which they want to say "no" based on their positions in life, (2) imagine a positive outcome of saying no, and (3) devise a systems map on how to get to the desired positive outcome. Liberatory joy requires consistent hard work and self-reflection, but the return on investment is exceptionally high.

For Academic Staff
March 3: Academics Without Borders - call for capacity building projects in partnership with an institution of higher learning in a low or middle-income country - Stage 1
Academics Without Borders (AWB) is a Canadian nonprofit organization. Its mission is to help low and middle-income countries improve their universities so that they can train their own experts and conduct research to assist in their countries’ development. Rather than an application for funding, this is a call for proposals for AWB projects. Applications may be submitted by a faculty or staff member at one of the universities and colleges in the AWB Network in collaboration with a partner institution of higher education in a low or middle-income country. MRU is a member of the AWB network. Expenses covered may include items such as economy air travel, airport transfers, medical and travel insurance, visa, necessary vaccinations and medications, in-transit costs for hotels and meals, and a stipend for the volunteer’s living expenses. Other costs may also be considered to facilitate volunteer involvement with the project, especially for projects implemented virtually. Partner institutions are asked to make some financial or in-kind contributions to support the volunteer involvement in the project but are not expected to be able to offer support in all areas. AWB will cover any volunteer costs (as above) that the partner institution cannot cover.
Amount / Duration: expenses; TBD
Contact: Corrie Young, Associate Executive Director - Projects & Network; cyoung@awb-usf.org.

March 8: SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants
Partnership Engage Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight program and the Connection program. These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. In addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.
