Wild Western Wordsmiths: A Workshop for Emerging Writers

Join us for a free creative writing workshop and write-in for aspiring writers ages 18–26 at The Holland Project with hosts Griffin Peralta, Reena Spansail, and City of Reno Poet Laureate Jesse James Ziegler. Get to know members of Reno's literary community, build new connections with fellow writers and poets, and contribute your work to a digital zine. Lunch will be provided. This is a free event. Space is limited and advanced registration is required.

Humanities at Play: Prisoner in My Homeland

As part of our continued conversation and programming honoring the Day of Remembrance and the 83rd anniversary of Japanese American incarceration, Nevada Humanities Program Manager Kathleen Kuo will stream the educational game Prisoner in My Homeland while discussing the game’s historical context and narrative with the audience. Developed by Mission US, the game follows the story of teenager Henry Tanaka and his family’s forced relocation to a prison camp in Manzanar, California.

Audience members are encouraged to share their stories and discuss their thoughts during this livestreamed event. No account is needed to tune in on Twitch; a free account enables audience members to participate in the chat.

Humanities at Play: Scientific Controversies and Board Games with Emma Frances Bloomfield

Why do controversial narratives stick, and how can we effectively counter them through storytelling? Join Emma Frances Bloomfield, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, at Meepleville Board Game Cafe on Saturday, March 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Bloomfield will first discuss her research and work on scientific controversies and board games as interventional, educational spaces, and then audience members will be able to play through related games such as Daybreak, Darwin’s Journey, and Catan: New Energies.

This is a free event. Space is limited and advanced registration is required. This event is intended for participants 16 and up.

As part of our celebration of Women’s History Month in March, learn more about women’s suffrage and this period in American history from historian Sarah Keyes (University of Nevada, Reno) at The Glass Die on Wednesday, March 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Keyes will first share her work and research on the study of suffrage in the U.S. West before audience members play the board game Votes for Women.

Please note that The Glass Die is a 21+ establishment. Individuals under the age of 21 will not be able to attend.

Step into Desert Oasis: Passage of Time and Places, an exhibition that merges the dynamic energy of urban life with the timeless beauty of the desert. Artist Valentin Yordanov documents his perception of the changing world — where cities like Las Vegas and natural wonders converge into one organic whole. His passion for travel, architecture, and design informs every aspect of his art. Yordanov’s work explores themes of urbanization, globalization, and environmental transformation. His paintings act as visual travelogues — vivid impressions of the locations he visits or envisions.

This exhibition is curated by Julian Kilker, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Emerging Technologies, at the UNLV Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies.
