Phase 2, rain, permits, and more

Rain is in the forecast for the next few days and I urge you to take the upcoming storms seriously. The foothill communities will be at increased risk of atmospheric rivers, so please don’t let your guard down.

A flash flood watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. If you are advised to evacuate, please don’t leave it up to chance. We have learned important lessons from previous fires that it's best to play it safe.

We've officially moved into Phase 2 of debris removal in Altadena by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, an important step forward in our commitment to restore the community. These cleanup efforts prioritize the health and safety of our residents and pave the way for them to rebuild their homes. Thank you to all the residents who've opted in so far. If you haven't submitted your form yet, I encourage you to do so below. There is a map available that shows where forms have been submitted already and where they’re still needed. Additionally, there's another map that lets you know what phase your property is currently in.

A one-stop rebuilding shop opened its doors this week. Co-located at the Altadena Disaster Recovery Center at 540 West Woodbury Road, this specialized center provides assistance to property owners navigating the rebuilding process, including permitting, planning, and other recovery-related services. It is designed to streamline support from multiple County departments and agencies to help affected property owners efficiently rebuild their houses, businesses, and damaged structures. The one-stop shop’s services are focused on assistance with rebuilding permits, including plan reviews and approvals, guidance on permitting requirements and zoning regulations, and no-cost consultations with building and safety officials from Los Angeles County’s Public Works, Fire, and Regional Planning Departments.

Small businesses, nonprofits, and workers impacted by the wildfires can apply for direct cash assistance grants through the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity. Businesses and nonprofits can get up to $25,000 and workers can get $2,000. I highly encourage those who are eligible to apply.

The US EPA is leading the effort to clear household hazardous materials from the communities devastated by the Eaton Fire and has set up staging facilities for the safe temporary storage, sorting, and transport to the appropriate disposal facilities. After careful consideration of all options available, they've selected the Altadena Golf Course as one of the sites.

To be clear, the materials never touch the ground, but move straight from trucks into their containers. The EPA is also conducting soil testing and air monitoring to ensure the safety of the surrounding area. I expect the US EPA to implement the most stringent protocols to ensure the health and safety of those who are doing this work, as well as the health and safety of those in proximity. My office will host another virtual community meeting on Monday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. to share information about rebuilding and resources. It's an important opportunity to hear the latest updates about recovery and to get your questions answered. Questions will be accepted in advance through Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the link below.
