  • Art Exhibition by IHA Program Grad
    • Check out the work of John Arnold on Thursday, October 5th from 6-7:30pm. 
    • Located at the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock.
    • After finishing his studies here at Michigan Tech John went on to become the Historical Architect at the Keweenaw National Historical Park.
    • His work "rendered in watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, and pen and ink, the drawings and paintings are presented not as finished works of art, rather like having the lucky opportunity to thumb through an artist-naturalist's sketchbook."
  •  Indigenous Peoples Day Drum Social
    • The social will be held outside the CDI at 3pm on October 9th
  • Indigenous Peoples' Day reception and event
    •  All are welcome to a gathering honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 9th.
    • This annual holiday celebrates the histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island.
    • We welcome James Rattling Leaf and Michael Waasegiizhig Price to the Michigan Tech campus. 
    • James Rattling Leaf will speak about leading with Indigenous cultural intelligence to advance equity in a changing climate; Michael Waasegiizhig Price will share Anishinaabe insights on adapting to a changing climate 
    • This event will be held in the Alumni Lounge in the Memorial Union Building at Michigan Tech from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM.
    • The session will open with an opportunity to visit with our honored guests while sharing light refreshments; presentations will commence around 12:00 PM. 
  • The Natural Resource Career Fair will be held on Tuesday October 17th from 10am-2pm in the Atrium and surrounding hallways of the UJ Noblet (Forestry) building.

Other Student Announcements
  • Undergraduate majors and faculty in the Department of Social Sciences gathered for a fun evening of games, art, pasties, s'mores, and friends at the Nara Nature Park last Friday! Thanks to everyone who came out for the event. Stop by the department to see the students' rendition of the Quincy Mineshaft in their collaborative art project.
  • A free community meal at 6:30pm on Tuesdays at Good Shepherd  - no strings attached, just food cooked by students, for students, with gluten free and vegetarian options available weekly. 
  • Research Survey
    • You are invited to participate in a 5-10 minute research survey conducted at the University of Michigan.
    • This survey is intended to collect perceptions and consumer behaviors toward the environmental chemicals per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), so-called “forever chemicals”. Participating in this study is completely voluntary.
    • As a thank you for your participation, you can provide your email to be entered into a drawing for 1 of 40 $25 electronic gift cards that will take place in March 2024.

Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  • Michigan Health Endowment Fund Community Engagement Workshop:  October 6, 2023, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the NMU Northern Center in Marquette
    • At this workshop attendees will see what authentic community engagement and participatory research and evaluation looks like in practice in UP communities.
    • There will also be a panel of organizational leaders.
    • This is a free workshop however registration is required. 
  • The Vernacular Architecture Forum is coming to Michigan Tech!
    • Consider submitting your work to present a paper or a poster at the annual meeting of the VAF on June 12 – June 15, 2024, which is being hosted in the Social Sciences Department next year.
    • Volunteers will be needed. Even if you don’t submit a paper, please consider volunteering to help during the cultural landscape tours on June 13-14. Social Sciences students who volunteer for the conference can attend the conference for free! Look for more info in the Spring. 
    • Students and emerging professionals may apply for the Pamela H. Simpson Presenter’s Fellowships, which offer support of up to $1000 for presenting papers and posters at VAF’s annual conference.

Undergrad or Grad:
  • GLRC Student Research Grants
    • These grants are intended to provide undergraduate and graduate students, with GLRC member advisors, an opportunity to gain experience in writing competitive grants, and to perform research they would not be able to attempt due to funding limitations.
    • The grants are also meant to provide seed research data for advisors to use in pursuing externally funded research support. 
    • Please read the GLRC Student Research Grants Guide for further information about grant terms, proposal instructions, and evaluation criteria.
    • The application form is on the GLRC Student Resources site.  Please submit the application and proposal as one PDF document to Jackie Gebhardt at grlcadmin-l@mtu.edu by the end of the day on November 1st.  
  • Part-time Project Manager in the Social Sciences Department at Michigan Tech funded by the Environmental Protection Agency.
    • This research project investigates various aspects of indoor and outdoor air quality, energy use, economic considerations, and community priorities for well-being in energy provision in Baraga and Houghton Counties.
    • We are looking for an individual who can facilitate community outreach, participant recruitment, and project logistics. The project manager will play a crucial role in ensuring the project's success by coordinating efforts across the team.
    • This is a part-time research project management position expected to start at 5 hours per week, with potential to increase the number of hours worked per week based on performance and availability of funding. Both Michigan Tech students and staff as well as individuals not affiliated with Michigan Tech are encouraged to apply. Applicants with prior experience engaging with the community in Baraga County are particularly desirable for this position.

  • Kiosk content development for Keweenaw County Historical Society
    • The Keweenaw County Historical Society (KCHS) seeks a student to develop web sites for touchscreen kiosks at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and other KCHS museums. The work is primarily historical writing with minimal computer knowledge needed, and the successful applicant will develop historical content and interactivity, not programming. Some graphic design experience or at least appreciation is desirable. Work will mostly be done remotely with one or two on-site visits in Eagle Harbor as necessary, will begin ASAP and will conclude by the end of this fall semester.
    • Websites for display kiosks at the sites will be developed in NicePage software (no prior experience necessary, though experience with interfaces like WordPress a plus). The student will meet with host(s) once a week throughout the term and submit a report and new iterations of the website as it develops every 2 weeks. Pay is $1500 paid in three installments.

Grad Positions:
  • Tenure-Track Geographer at Colorado State University
    • The Department of Anthropology and Geography at Colorado State University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor in health geography to begin August 16, 2024.
    • The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in Geography or related discipline. 
    • The job reports being 35% Research, 50% Teaching, and 15% Service.

  • Assistant Professor focused on Community Sustainability
    • Located at The Helga Otto Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming.
    • The position is open to a wide number of fields including environmental studies, geography, anthropology, sustainability studies, American studies, international studies, development studies, planning, and related fields.  
    • Review applications will begin October 20, 2023.
  • Assistant Professor of Environmental Science
    • The Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management discipline in the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources (CNR) is seeking an environmental social scientist for a tenure track position focused on climate issues, with an emphasis on state and/or local policies that support rural and urban communities.
    • The primary teaching responsibilities for this position will be courses on sustainable communities, energy policy, and climate change.
    • The teaching load for faculty in the CNR is 12 credits per semester. Scholarship and service are expected, and opportunities exist for involvement in outreach and international programs.
  • Assistant Professor in Political Science-Political Theory
    • This tenure track position at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City will teach courses in Political theory and other subjects that align with their interests.
    • They are especially interested in scholars whose research addresses climate change in relation to social stratifications, including race, class, post-coloniality, and disability.
    • This position will remain open until filled and will begin in the summer of 2024. 
  • 2 Sustainability Science Professor Positions
    • Furman University is seeking two tenure-track positions in Sustainability Science at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level beginning in August 2024.
    • The successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in sustainability or a related field prior to August 1, 2024.
    • Teaching responsibilities consist of four courses with labs per year. 
    • Position 1 - Quantitative Sustainability: For this position, we seek a Sustainability Scientist with a strong background in quantitative research methods and systems modeling broadly defined. We are particularly interested in the application of quantitative methods to sustainability metrics and the ability to train students, through classwork and undergraduate research.
    • Position 2 - Community Sustainability: For this position, we seek a Sustainability Scientist with a background in community-based participatory research. Areas of focus could include but are not limited to social and environmental justice, governance and leadership, climate resilience and adaptation, and sustainability transitions.
