The Lives of Chickens Inside Thailand’s Factory Farms
|
|
Together with World Animal Protection Thailand, we’ve investigated the brutal conditions for broiler chickens on industrial farms that supply popular fast-food chains in Thailand. Our photojournalists Haig and Taichi Kaito documented many grim realities: overcrowding, hand-catching birds, and sick and dying chickens languishing without care.
While popular fast-food chains claim that their chicken suppliers raise their birds with care and ensure they lead healthy lives, the results of our investigation tell a different story.

A Welcome Win: Octopus Farm Closure

We have great news: Kanaloa Octopus Farm on the Big Island of Hawaii has permanently closed after the state decided not to renew their lease.
In 2022, The Every Animal Project Founder Laura Lee Cascada documented wild-caught Hawaiian day octopuses confined in small, barren tanks with just a small cave to hide in and a toy or two for enrichment.
We worked to increase the reach of Laura’s investigation by making her visuals available on our stock platform and getting them out to media, prompting interviews and coverage in the US, the UK and Canada. This closure marks a significant milestone in the ongoing global efforts to halt the expansion of octopus farming.

In Dulce Ramírez’ arresting image, we meet a newborn calf calling out for her mother, panic flaring across her face. She was deemed too weak and was soon killed by workers at this dairy farm in Mexico. The intensity of her gaze and her vulnerability are unmistakable. Look closely and you can hear her keening. Captured at eye level and with no distracting colours or elements to pull us away from her story, this powerful photo draws us into her experience.
This image, taken by Ramirez during an investigation with Animal Equality, was published widely and continues to influence both policy and the public. We included it in our book, HIDDEN Animals in the Anthropocene.

Kapparot, or Kaporos, a ritual practiced by certain sects of orthodox Jews before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, took place last week in New York. In 2022, We Animals Media photojournalists Kelly Guerin, Molly Condit and Victoria de Martigny were there to document the treatment of animals at this annual event.

ICYMI: Hillside Animal Sanctuary
|
|
“It’s a job for the tough, you know.”
Wendy Valentine has dedicated her life to helping animals. In 1995, with just 20 acres of land, she founded Hillside Animal Sanctuary. Since then, Valentine has campaigned and helped care for thousands of animals in need. Today, Hillside covers 2000 acres of land and is home to over 3000 animals. Watch our short film about Wendy’s life work, which was directed by Alex Lockwood and commissioned by our Unbound Project.
