Newsletter - October 2023

Welcome to our October newsletter

This month our newsletter includes:

Directors Update

We had a busy summer here at Healthwatch East Sussex with our Annual Event, 10 year Anniversary, Rye Listening Tour, Summer Roadshow and lots of other project work. With autumn well and truly upon us, we are now focussing on pulling together all that we have heard and getting ready to start on some new projects.
In this newsletter you will see that we have launched a new survey this week asking people about their experiences of accessing help or support about an ear wax problem. If you have an experience to share, please do complete our survey and let us know how its been for you. To share any other experiences of health and care services, remember to visit our feedback centre.

Healthwatch Poll: Have you or a loved one been discharged from hospital in the last 12 months?

This month we want to hear about you or loved ones experience of Hospital Discharge.

Please share your experience with us via our quick poll.

Click here to take our poll
Last month we asked about your experience travelling to access health and care services/places.

Everyone who responded to our poll lived within 5 miles of their GP surgery, and an overwhelming majority within 5 miles of their Pharmacy/Chemist.

Hospitals required the furthest distance to travel, with 20% of respondents travelling 11+ miles, and 40% travelling between 6 and 10 miles.

Interestingly, the greatest variation was found in the distances that people travel to their dentist and optician, with many travelling further to access these than for other primary care services.

Tell us your experiences of treatment for Ear Wax

Our survey is open until midnight on Tuesday 30th November 2023 and all responses will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Healthwatch will share the findings with decision-makers, commissioners and service providers to help inform delivery of health and care services in East Sussex.

Our volunteer activity

Hear from one of our volunteers about why they became a volunteer.

Why I became a volunteer

In 1989 I had to retire early due to long term medical conditions, but I wanted to help other people. To give a ‘Voice to the Older People’. This was using my own experience and finding the right pathways in the NHS.

Having been told that my condition would either mean me having to use a wheelchair or at worst be dead by the time I reached the age of 70 years old, this meant my life would end in 15/16 years' time. So, I didn’t like both these possibilities and started to find out what I needed to extend my mobility and suggested life expectancy.

So, I joined ESDA (East Sussex Disabled Association), as a Director, and SECAMB (South East Coast Ambulance), as Governor. These both gave me access to various resources and possibly the right pathway to get help. I am Chair of East Sussex Hastings, Rother, Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford Patient Participation Group (PPG). Along with my own surgery Hastings and Rother Healthcare PPG.

I wanted to use the information I had found so I joined various groups including The Friends of Conquest Hospital, NHS panels and getting newsletters from the Adult Social Care, NHS Bulletins, and looking online for more information. The more I looked the more information I found and started opening other ways to help others, especially the Older People and Disabled People.

I joined Rother Seniors’ Forum and one of the Founder members created East Sussex Seniors Association, the umbrella of eight seniors groups within East Sussex.

At the first meeting of Healthwatch, in the Towner Gallery, in Eastbourne, volunteers were asked to put their names forward, alas I was becoming increasingly busy with my other voluntary work and didn’t feel I could get involved. I now enjoy my involvement with Healthwatch and the various surveys that we carry out, like the PLACE (for the NHS), Disability cafes, open air events.

I enjoy meeting people and volunteering, so much I now work longer hours than I did when I was in full employment.

Do you want to make a difference to health and social care in your area?

Then join our wonderful volunteer team!

Our volunteer opportunities are really flexible, you can do as much or as little as you want and it can fit around what you already do.

We work across the county and can match you with opportunities that work for you.

Whatever your age or background we would love to talk to you.
