Walking the Lake District's
Old Tourist Route

By Sue Talbot

The 19th century witnessed the emergence of a new phenomenon: tourism. Among the popular destinations during this time was a picturesque route, now known as the Old Tourist Route, which took travellers on horse-drawn carriages among some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery.

Beginning in the colourful market town of Keswick, the route winds through Borrowdale, along the Honister Pass to Buttermere, and returns to Keswick through one of the national park’s most beautiful areas, Newlands Valley.

New Video:
Exploring the Camel Trail

The Cornish countryside is some of the finest in the UK, so it’s little wonder why the region is so popular with walkers. The Camel Trail, by contrast, is a quiet, scenic walk that tells the story of North Cornwall’s industrial history. This route travels 18 miles from Wenfordbridge to Padstow along well-surfaced paths, providing lovely waterside views and a calm ambience.

The Camel Trail is waymarked throughout and dotted with facilities and resting spots, while its level terrain makes it a great choice for new walkers of all fitness levels and abilities.
