Travay Nou Ap Kontinye

“Our Work Continues!” in Haitian Creole.

Despite the unrest and chaos in Port au Prince, Haiti, our work at Grace has not been significantly impacted at this time. Many of you are concerned about the birth center and staff, and we want you all to know that our work continues. Ninotte Lubin, Birth Center Director, sends the board an update most days so we wanted to share some of those with all of you, our loyal supporters.

There was exciting news this morning (March 16) as Ninotte and staff welcomed our 50th baby! Mama arrived at 5:45AM just twelve minutes before she gave birth to her beautiful son, pictured below.

As the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words. Women gathered in the courtyard on prenatal day this week for some educational time with staff and to simply share their stories with one another.

Grace partnered with the Foundation for the Advancement of Haitian Midwives to sponsor a slightly belated celebration of International Women’s Day for the Youth Club, a group that the community youth engage in after they complete Grace’s Health and Well-being Program. It was a much needed time for these young people to relax and enjoy some free time, and for many to taste pizza for the first time!

Ninotte reports she is conserving gas because it is harder to get and it is outrageously expensive. Phone and wifi connectivity has been more spotty than usual making her weekly call with Kathi Mulder, Grace Board President, more difficult. There may well be food shortages to come - unfortunately, this will not be a new situation to live through. There is some food grown on the grounds of Grace that does provide a bit of a buffer to food insecurity. All are hoping and praying for solutions for Haiti very soon. Ninotte sends her love and appreciation to all of you and wants you all to know that your support, kindness and love is felt in Grand Bassin, Haiti. Most importantly, Grace will carry on.
