  • Cidering Party Sat Sept. 30
    • Carl Blair and Steve Walton would once again like to invite you to a cidering party at Carl’s farm on Saturday Sept. 30.
    • Collect your own apples, or collect some from the on-site orchard (his orchard did not bear well this year, so quantities are quite limited there) and scrat (chop) and press them into cider!
    • It is important to bring jugs to put the juice in; also consider bringing snacks and chairs.
    • The event is family friendly, and will go on even with a little rain.
    • The location is Carl and Julie Blair's farm and orchard between Hancock and Calumet at "Gale Farm Rd, Calumet, MI" (or if you like coordinates: 47.204755, -88.461839 or https://w3w.co/activation.subscriber.bats). It’s just south of the Calumet Golf Course off Old County Rd., and best approached from US-41

    • Last weekend, our Grad students enjoyed time exploring the Keweenaw and orienting to our programs at the third annual Graduate Retreat. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success!

Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  •  Global and Community Engagement Conference Call for Student Presenters: Theme "The Power of Partnerships" The conference will be held Saturday Oct 14 in The Memorial Union Building Ballroom. 
    • This conference gives you the opportunity to meet people who are committed to work in support of communities. It is also is an opportunity for students to present in a smaller less intimidating setting.
    • If you are interested in presenting at this conference please submit a proposal  by September 29, 2023
  • Michigan Health Endowment Fund Community Engagement Workshop:  October 6, 2023, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the NMU Northern Center in Marquette
    • At this workshop attendees will see what authentic community engagement and participatory research and evaluation looks like in practice in UP communities.
    • There will also be a panel of organizational leaders.
    • This is a free workshop however registration is required.

Undergrad:
  • Gillman Scholarship
    • The Gilman Scholarship is a US Department of State scholarship awarded to Pell Eligible students enbarking on study abroad programs.
    • An information session will be held in the Wadsworth Hall Cherry Room on Tuesday Sep. 28th from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
    • This information session will cover eligibility for the scholarship, application deadlines, and helpful tips for crafting your essays for the Gilman Scholarship.
  • The US Geological Survey is hiring students for Summer 2024
    • These summer internships will be available at field, laboratory, or office related scientific positions throughout the country for up to 5 months.
    • Nominations of students by faculty or directors of field training courses or experiences required.
    • If you are interested, please ask one of our faculty to nominate you!
    • Nominations are open through October 27, 2023
  • Fall 2023 Department of Social Sciences Undergraduate Professional Development Mini-Award
    • The Department of Social Sciences supports majors in our department, with the opportunity to enhance their research and professional development.
    • This award cycle covers activity between July 1, 2023- June 30, 2024
    • Award Applications are due October 6th
Undergrad or Grad Positions:
  • Part-time Project Manager in the Social Sciences Department at Michigan Tech funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. This research project investigates various aspects of indoor and outdoor air quality, energy use, economic considerations, and community priorities for well-being in energy provision in Baraga and Houghton Counties. We are looking for an individual who can facilitate community outreach, participant recruitment, and project logistics. The project manager will play a crucial role in ensuring the project's success by coordinating efforts across the team.
  • Position Details: This is a part-time research project management position expected to start at 5 hours per week, with potential to increase the number of hours worked per week based on performance and availability of funding. Both Michigan Tech students and staff as well as individuals not affiliatedwith Michigan Tech are encouraged to apply. Applicants with prior experience engaging with thecommunity in Baraga County are particularly desirable for this position.
