Student Spotlight

Like most ETP majors, I chose the Environmental Thought and Practice major because of my passion for the environment, and specifically my concern for climate change. One of the strengths of the ETP major is its flexibility, allowing students to explore a variety of courses in a plethora of departments, cultivating a personalized experience for each student. I particularly loved the class RELG 2210: Religion Ethics & Environment with Professor Willis Jenkins, because it offered so much insight into the intersections of religion, philosophy, and environmental ethics.

The ETP major and the skills I have developed have opened doors for exciting opportunities; most recently, in the summer of 2023 I had a student fellowship with UVA’s Decarbonization Academy; in this program, I was tasked with conducting environmental history research at Morven, UVA’s Sustainability Lab. I was able to use the intersections and multidisciplinary mindset cultivated by ETP to conduct research in a manner that was cognizant of the historical, ecological, cultural, and socio-economic dimensions of the subject matter.

  • I chose ETP because I wanted more of a holistic environmental education that included value, ethics, and cultural components, and I felt that it complemented my primary major of Urban and Environmental Planning well.

  • My favorite classes have been Religion Ethics and Global Environments, Global Perspectives on Environmental Justice, and Climate Histories of the Mediterranean!

  • Since being in the program I have founded a climate action organization (DivestUVA), worked in geospatial research, worked for the government in transportation sustainability, and traveled to Appalachia to support forest defenders opposing the Mountain Valley Pipeline construction

  • After UVA I plan on working as an urban planner specializing in housing planning with a focus on climate adaptation
