Greetings IFSA Family,

What an amazing few months we have had. With the IFSS in the rear-view mirror and a new Board and Heads of Commissions (HoC’s) elected with new sub commissioners in bound we are ready to undertake an exciting new term, with more news, workshops, opportunities, and excitement that ever before. The new board is ready build on the successes of our organization and achieve even greater things in the future.


We should also take this opportunity to reflect on and thank our outgoing members for their selfless and dedicated service to our fair organization. They have made significant contributions, and we are grateful for their contributions and leadership.


We at the excited to see what the future holds for IFSA. We are confident that we will be able to build on our past successes and lead us to even greater heights. What’s New?

Discover the success of the Young African Forestry Professionals Publication project (YAFP) in the recent book launch events! Jointly undertaken by the Joint IUFRO-IFSA Task Force on Forest Education and IUFRO-SPDC, the book, "Building a Successful Forestry Career in Africa: Inspirational Stories and Opportunities," shares inspiring tales from 23 young professionals across 12 African countries. Over 500 copies have been distributed, creating impact through workshops and events organized by IFSA Local Committees in Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and more. Exciting news! The IFSA Open Letter on Gender and Forest Education has now been translated into Indonesian, Spanish, and Turkish. These translations mark a significant milestone in our mission to promote gender equality and inclusivity in forest education. By expanding accessibility through translations, we aim to foster diverse and inclusive conversations on gender equality in the field. We're also seeking IFSA members to support further translations—contact us at gender@ifsa.net if you're interested.

Delegation Experiences

European Bioeconomy Scientific Forum (EBSF) 2023

At the European Bioeconomy Scientific Forum (EBSF) 2023, IFSA and IAAS delegates shared their insights on the pivotal role of youth in advancing bioeconomy. Gremary Aza, a PhD candidate and member of the Food Agriculture Youth Institute, emphasized the need to engage young people in bioeconomy discussions, citing challenges in Latin America. They discussed limited educational access, the importance of scaling up innovation, and the need for greater awareness. Thomas Westhoff from IAAS World and Agustion Rosello, a former IFSA President, highlighted youth's potential as a driving force for bioeconomy transformation. Visiting IUFRO HQ in Vienna, Austria

IFSA delegates recently visited the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, following their participation in the European Bioeconomy Scientific Forum 2023. The visit strengthened the longstanding partnership between IFSA and IUFRO, which dates back 22 years and was successfully renewed in 2019. During the meeting, discussions centered on collaborative events, the IFSA-IUFRO work plan, and preparations for the IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden, where IFSA will play an active role in various sessions and initiatives, offering valuable experiences for its members. Canopy Conversation

Don't miss the latest episode of Canopy Conversations, titled "Bridging Borders with Branches: Exploring Global Forestry Bonds through IFSA and the International Forestry Student Symposium." In this special episode, IFSA's Wening Ila Idzatilangi and Jonas Sitte from the Organizing Committee of IFSS 2023, Germany, engage in insightful discussions. They highlight the international connections formed among forestry students during the International Forestry Student Symposium and how these connections deepen our understanding of global forests. Upcoming Events

Join us on October 11, 2023, at 1 pm (UTC + 0) for a workshop titled "How to conduct a Systematic Review of Literature for Forest Science and other disciplines" with Matilda Van Den Bosch, a senior researcher at the Barcelona Institute of Global Health. This workshop, organized by the Joint IUFRO - IFSA Task Force on Forest Education, aims to provide step-by-step guidelines for conducting a proper systematic review of literature (SLR) in the field of forest science.
