September 2023 - We reached the summit! Ok, we mean we attended the Paratext Summit this month. We didn't climb a mountain, but we did drive over quite a few of the Smokey Mountains on this trip. This was our second trip to the Paratext Summit and the best one yet.

Paratext is the most trusted Bible translation software, used by leading Bible translation and ministry organizations around the world. This Summit brings together the development team members from around the world, supporting SIL staff and leadership, and this year the community partners were invited as well. … Make Platform.Bible/Paratext.Bible a growing community. Platform.Bible is the new framework that Paratext.Bible is being built upon. We know that can sound complicated, but the simple explanation, these two applications are the new version of the Paratext software in development. If you really want more details, reach out and schedule a time to talk to T.R. as he would enjoy talking about the work his teams are doing.

The Summit included

• Keynotes from Ming-Jinn Tong (Knowledgeworkx) about improving our cultural agility.  

• Technical track sessions on Status, Extensions, Relationships, and Innovation.

• Focus on Platform.Bible and bringing people in our community together.

• Purposeful time to get to know each other better over meals, breaks, and games.

It was an incredible week full of so many great conversations. T.R. really enjoyed getting to meet in person, for the first time, a few more members of his teams. Angie experienced something new. She got to see her brother, Matt Lyons, at an SIL event as he joined the Paratext team this year. She said it was so odd, yet wonderful, to keep hearing her brother talking at one of these events.  It is a joy to be serving at SIL with family.

T.R. continues to follow up on conversations and collaborations begun at the 2023 Paratext Summit. Great things are happening to accelerate the translation of the Bible into all languages.

God at Work

Here are some things He has done recently:

• We had seventy participants from eleven organizations attend the 2023 Paratext Summit. That is amazing growth in three years for this event, which started as a Paratext team meeting and has grown into a community effort around Platform.Bible and Paratext.Bible.

• Three are over 13,000 active users of Paratext from 400 unique organizations. 5326 active registered Bible Translation Projects. 3,280 published texts in the Digital Bible Library.

I hope this small glimpse encourages you to see what God is doing through all of us serving at SIL International.

Prayer and Praise

• Please pray for the upcoming Bible Translation Conference (October 13 to 17) at the International Linguistics Center in Dallas. T.R. will be attending virtually but many of his team members will be there in person.

• Please pray as we work through the ETEN funding proposal process for 2024.

• Please continue to pray for an unspoken request that Angie and T.R. are working through.

• Praising God for a great Paratext Summit at Ridgecrest Conference Center.

• Praising God for Autumn in Indiana. The temperatures are cooling so we get outside more. The leaves are changing to beautiful colors. Our garden is winding down for the season but still producing wonderfully.

How can you support the work we are doing with SIL International?

Glad you asked! T.R. is currently in a fully funded position in his role as Director of Bible Translation Software. The finances come from a funding organization devoted to innovation in Bible Translation. Because T.R.’s position is fully funded, we are not currently requesting you to partner with us financially. What we could use the most are your prayers and encouragement. If you would like to financially support the work that SIL does, you can give online or via check. If you give online, you can designate Language Technology or any of our specific projects that interest you. If you give via check, you can include in the note field a designation of Bible Translation Software - KBTD16. Thank you for your prayers and support.
