Ahoy!

Earlier this month, ODL's Director of Sensors & Systems, Jessica Sandoval, led a workshop as part of the Collective Solution Accelerator hosted by the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS). This four-day accelerator event aimed to unite various deep-ocean observing communities in developing practical solutions.

ODL's workshop, "Cheap & Deep Technology as a Means for Capacity Development," focused on low-cost ocean technology. Participants, including technology users, developers, and funders from six countries, worked together to assess the current state of low-cost ocean technology, establish common language and technical standards, identify gaps in access, and outline goals for sustainable ocean observation technology.

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations, particularly emphasizing the need for standardized communication, community cohesion, and infrastructure building within the low-cost ocean tech field. Some of our early takeaways are summarized in our latest blog post

The passion and enthusiasm shown by this community is a huge part of why we do what we do, and we're excited to help lead and shape this work now and into the future.

An Ocean Advocacy Journey: At Sea With OceanX Young Explorers Program

In August, ODL's Capacity Development Program Manager, Nadiah Rosli, participated in an expedition aboard OceanXplorer, supporting 16 undergraduate students from US universities. Along with ODL's Susan Poulton, she taught courses in media & storytelling, data and AI in ocean exploration, and ocean justice. In this blog, Nadiah reflects on her first experience at sea and how she connects it to her own journey in ocean advocacy.

New Book: The Future of Exploration

Katy Croff Bell contributed an essay to this book, where the world’s top scientists and explorers discuss and share insights about what motivates them, what is left to explore, why the 21st century will be the greatest age of exploration in human history, and why it matters. All proceeds from The Future of Exploration will support early career field scientists, explorers, and conservationists pursuing innovative projects across a wide range of disciplines. Order Now

COBRA Master Class Paper Published
This paper summarizes the 14-week virtual Master Class launched by COBRA to address the lack of training for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in deep-sea expedition leadership. Initial results reinforce the need for such training and show promise, with a quarter of the Fellows submitting research proposals within six months of the end of the class.
