More info to come soon!CARL Conference 2024, titled "The Insufficient Librarian: How Justice Fills the Gaps in Our Practice," will take place April 3-6, 2024 at the Holiday Inn San Jose. This is an opportunity to build a brilliant tomorrow which seeks to learn from the past, but never repeat it.

CARLDIG-S Fall Program 2023 - Assessment: What is it good for? (Absolutely nothing?)
When: Friday, December 1st (half-day)
Where: California State Polytechnic Institute, Pomona

After 3 years of virtual programming, we’re coming back in person and offering our first half-day hybrid program hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. Many of us may feel as though we’re mining and creating data for no one, or that the information we’re providing doesn’t impact anyone. Let us tell you, it does!

The cost of registration includes a light breakfast, along with snacks and drinks throughout the day. Due to the cost of reserving a hybrid-capable room, there will be a small cost for virtual attendance.

  • $30 for CARL members
  • $40 for non-CARL members
  • $15 for Students and Retirees
  • $10 for virtual

Keep an eye on our listserv, Facebook, and the CARL Slack channel for the agenda. You can now register for in-person or virtual attendance. Registration will close on Friday, November 17, 2023, so register quickly if you want to participate!

    • No AV at the hotel, so that needs to be sorted out. It will cost more now, since we have to use an outside vendor.

  • President (Shamika)
    • Elections
      • Julie from (Accreditation Resources Conference), April 21st – might be a good opportunity to get people to CARL and CARL IGs to present and get membership and board member nominations.
      • Every single person on this board is responsible for marketing.
      • Board members need to ensure that our positions are aligned and updated in the CARLEX Document store – all info, contact lists, etc. Prepare information for the next member in the same position. Shift mindset to “How can I help?”
      • All past CARL Board members have a responsibility to be a mentor, even after we cycle off in our positions.
      • Shamika shared some notes from a colleague who was very unhappy with all library associations, including CARL. Their colleague shared that the library associations are very surface level and how we don’t dive deep into some of the bigger issues happening nation-wide in libraries (ex. Banned books, Trans-rights).
      • Melissa shared how difficult it is to find people who have the energy to participate in these groups. Everyone is over-taxed, so it’s been very difficult - it’s not a unique issue to CARL, it’s happening with all library associations. Especially with people working harder and trying to establish work-life boundaries.
      • Laura shared that we can’t be partisan, but we can be an issue-advocacy organization – if we do this, we just have to move forward on this as a board. Things like creating templates for letters for state legislators, newspapers, etc.. Daniel said it might exclude members (which is okay), but Laura said not-advocating is also excluding members. Laura would be happy to take on some letter templates.
      • Shamika said that we don’t have to do anything official as becoming an advocacy group, but we can at least let our members know that we hear them and can provide resources / a guide. We need to focus on survival as a group - we have membership, but not a lot of leadership. We need to be mindful that some people think we don’t care. It’s a fine line. Being an advocacy group is not necessarily the CARL charge, but as members, if we want the chance, we need to be the change. We need to present, serve on the board, etc.
      • Rayheem quoted one of his favorite tv shows, Truth: “If nothing in the world matters, then all that matters is what you do” – echoed Shamika that we are not strong enough to be an advocacy group. Rayheem asked, how do we better serve our members in CARL and encourage/empower them to consider the various social justice elements and be advocates. How do we work on being a better organization? We need a strategy to build over time. Our organization doesn’t currently have any nominations for the board, so we need to work on that, so we can just be more functional/strong as a group/board.
      • Kelli shared 2 main parts to focus on:
        • How we do this is an ongoing/forever conversation.
        • Creating the space and vulnerability for authentic conversations.
        • Building/solidifying infrastructure and connections with IGs and board.
      • Daniel shared that people join organizations that they find beneficial. If they aren’t joining, they don’t think there’s any value. If we’re just in meetings talking about things - there’s no value. We are all in meetings all day, don’t need another one.
      • Rayheem suggests to discuss more about how we can strengthen our IGs and CARL.
      • Shamika: move more towards action, rather than just talking about things
