R#33 | Belated Welcome to REMO

Dear CustOMER,

For thousands of you this is the very first time you are receiving an email from us. That's because I am literally too stupid to have noticed that, for the past few years, there has been a problem with the integration of our online orderers with the Mailchimp platform that we use to send our weekly emails. Whoops!

So ... to all of you: Welcome to the now 35 year old REMO adventure. Our story HERE.

2022 and 2023 have been eventful years. In a nutshell we have:

1. Outsourced our T Shirt Designs to a quality print-on-demand partner in Melbourne
2. Revived our famous Stripey Things range, returning our production to Australia
3. Refreshed our website (since 2016) with a shiny new 2023 version
4. Acknowledged our storytelling DNA by introducing REMO Stories
5. Launched a new REMORANDOM printed book series and subscription service

As regards REMORANDOM #1 … the new book is being positively received. Some are calling it "TikTok in Print" and we'll take that compliment. Read all 31 5-star reviews HERE.

... and let me leave you with a repeat of what I said in our latest email:

OK, I'm just going to say it out loud: REMORANDOM is a celebration of curiosity and invention; and just happens to be THE PERFECT GIFT for friends, team members and clients.

Over night we received an enquiry [that has since become a firm order] from someone looking to customise a quantity of RR#1. He writes: "I work in tech research. My role is to provide insights and future vision, etc. for my clients, so figured a physical book would be refreshing - and it keeps on theme with the idea of providing insights and telling stories." And then this morning we received another order for 64 copies (2 cartons) from long time Melbourne CustOMER Dave Deveny for distribution to "friends, staff and clients" of his Cuckoo Creative brand communications agency.

Book customisation ideas would include: enclosing your own postcard (Dave's solution), applying a sticker to the inside cover (what we suggested for the tech researcher), and the enclosure of a printed bookmark containing your message. FYI we use Vistaprint HERE.

Also, yesterday I attended the SXSW Sydney conference and got to meet Rohit Bhargava the founder of the Non-Obvious Company. He agreed that the randomness of RR would be an effective way to "get people out of their algorithm"; so, not just a source of interest and delight, but also potentially a way to trigger fresh thinking and invention. Yes!

So, if this sounds potentially interesting to you, then I would get onto it ASAP, as a couple of big orders could leave us short of copies as we approach the end of the year.

The ordering process is self-service. Discounts are factored in to the higher quantities e.g. if you order 32, the unit price drops from $40 to $28. Start playing with quantities HERE.

Cheers,

FEATURED STORY
Barber Pole

To advertise this service barber surgeons began to hang the blood-soaked bandages and the blood-stained pole outside their establishments, and this practice would ultimately morph into the development of the symbolic red and white barber pole: red representing the blood and white for the bandages. Read the story on our website HERE ... and subscribe to our very first printed REMORANDOM (coming soon) HERE.

FEATURED STORY
Marilyn Monroe's Billowing Dress

The dress in question appears in a sequence from the 1955 Billy Wilder film The Seven Year Itch in which Marilyn Monroe (playing "the Girl") and co-star Tom Ewell ("Richard Sherman") exit the Trans-Lux 52nd Street Theatre on Lexington Avenue in New York City having just watched Creature from the Black Lagoon. When they hear a subway train passing below the grate on the footpath, she steps on it and asks "Ooh, do you feel the breeze from the subway?" as the wind blows the dress up, exposing her legs and underwear. The scene went on to become one of the most iconic moments in movie history, but the ramifications of that event would prove to be more than just cultural.

FEATURED STORY
The Rotor

German engineer Ernst Walter Hoffmeister designed and patented an amusement park attraction in 1948 that would earn him fame … and a modest amount of fortune. The Rotor is a large, upright barrel, rotated to create an inward acting centripetal force supplied by the wall's support's force. Once at full speed, the floor gets retracted (eek!) … leaving the riders stuck to the wall of the drum. It may look precarious, but they won’t fall down. At the end of the ride cycle, the drum slows down and gravity takes over. The riders slide down the wall slowly.
