DUT IS HOSTING THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED SAFE-U CRIME AWARENESS WEEK 

The Durban University of Technology is hosting a Crime Awareness Week which will take place on the Ritson campus Durban and the Indumiso campus in the Midlands, from Monday, 23 October to Friday, 27 October 2023. The Crime Awareness Week is being hosted by DUT Protection Services.

The DUT SAFE-U Crime Awareness Week initiative can play a significant role in advancing the goals and objectives outlines in the ENVISION2030 strategy. By promoting safety, engagement, well-being, and community collaboration, it contributes to creating a more secure and supportive environment that aligns with the university’ long term vision and objectives.

DUT STAFF AND STUDENTS CREATE LASTING MEMORIES AT THE VICE-CHANCELLOR’S CUP 2023 

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) staff and students united to create lasting memories at the inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Cup 2023, which was held on the Steve Biko Sports Field and at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, on Steve Biko campus, on Saturday, 14 October 2023. Team Durban were the overall winners of the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup 2023 after a close win against Team Pietermaritzburg.

The aerobics, basketball, chess, e-sport, football, karate, netball and touch rugby first teams from the Durban-based DUT campuses competed against the first teams from the DUT Midlands campuses. The curtain raiser match was held between the Executive Management Committee team and the Labour Union representatives’ team.

DUT’S DR MAPULA RAZWINANI RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE PHENOMENAL WOMEN SCIENTISTS

A Post-doctoral Fellow under the Technology, Transfer and Innovation unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Mapula Razwinani was recently honoured as one of the seven phenomenal women scientists at the 2023 L’Oréal – UNESCO For Women in Science National Awards ceremony (FWIS). This prestigious awards ceremony took place recently in Sandton, Gauteng.

Dr Razwinani (40) who comes from Magau village in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo was ecstatic when she finally obtained this award after her application was consecutively rejected in 2018 and 2019.  Her research focuses on the use of plant extracts encapsulated in hydrocolloid bandages for the future treatment of burn wounds. She was awarded a research grant to advance her research.

DR THOBEKA SHOZI-NXUMALO IS THE FIRST, PROUD DOCTORAL GRADUATE OF DUT’S HLOMISA SKILLS ACADEMY

The Hlomisa Skills Academy at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is proud to introduce its first Doctoral graduate. The Hlomisa Skills Academy was launched in November 2019 as part of the DUT ‘Grow-Our-Own-Timber’ programmes.

Alumnus Dr Thobeka Shozi-Nxumalo was the proud recipient of a three year bursary from the prestigious DUT Hlomisa Skills Academy.  

She recently graduated with her PhD in Higher Education Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

DEPARTMENT OF ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES AND MANAGEMENT HOSTED A PRAXIS ENTREPRENEURSHIP 2023 EXHIBITION

The Department of Entrepreneurial Studies and Management, in the Faculty of Management Sciences hosted a Praxis Entrepreneurship 2023 exhibition, with a slogan entitled: “embracing 1000 ways to conduct business” which took place at the Curries Fountain Sports Development Centre on Wednesday, 11 October 2023.

The Praxis Entrepreneurship 2023 exhibition was a platform where students became the architects of their own success. It was an extraordinary exhibition showcasing student-generated prototypes of genuine products and services. The exhibition was hosted to experience a day of entrepreneurial education, networking, and promotional prospects, bringing together stakeholders, entrepreneurs, local schools, and consumers.

DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Simangele Zuma spoke to Sanele Doyisa, robotics facilitator in the MICTSETA Centre of Excellence in the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am a robotics facilitator in the MICTSETA Centre of Excellence in the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics. I am responsible for empowering students to harness the power of robots and automation while also comprehending their ramifications for the world of Accounting and Informatics.
