The Poppy Project Returns From November 1 - November 11, Covering the Museum in Textile Poppies

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1 - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11

This Remembrance Day, Niagara Falls is commemorating those who protected our freedoms, with a little help from the global community, by continuing to display a beautiful art installation of poppies cascading over the Niagara Falls History Museum.

The Poppy Project was a collaborative community art project begun in 2020 by the Niagara Falls History Museum in conjunction with Stick'N Needles, a Niagara Falls stitching guild. We reached out to the public and asked them to knit and crochet poppies to be included in a large-scale art installation. The response was overwhelming, with over 11,000 poppy donations coming from every province in Canada, twenty-five different states in the United States, as well as Denmark and New Zealand. Heartfelt letters accompanied many of the poppies, dedicating them to family members who fought and died in the numerous wars that have affected our world.

The poppies are displayed on both the exterior and the interior of the historic 1874 stone building. Local artists Joanne Ring and Emily Andrews were brought on board to help design the pieces.

Join Christine Daigle and Francine McCarthy for "Are We Now Living in the Anthropocene?" November 23

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23 @ 7:00pm

Crawford Lake, Ontario, has been all over the news recently with the announcement that it has been chosen as the site for the proposed Golden Spike: the marker for the start of a new geological epoch, the “Anthropocene.” But have we indeed entered a new epoch triggered by human impact on the Earth system? What are the indicators for that and what evidence does Crawford Lake provide? How does clear evidence of anthropogenic impact – as early as the late 13th century – inform the definition of the proposed Anthropocene Epoch? Along with these questions, we need to investigate what it means to live in the Anthropocene. Is the term a misnomer? Are all humans responsible (although they have all inherited the same planetary conditions)? And, more importantly, what can we learn from this scientific advancement and how may it guide our actions moving forward?

To ensure a viable habitat for present and future generations, sustainable ways of living must be quickly adopted. The artefact collections of the Niagara Falls Museums illustrate times of balance and times of imbalance for humans. These objects help us to think of our place on Earth as just one of many species and the impact that we have. Forging a new way together using Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Science, we can create a hopeful vision for a sustainable future.

Niagara Falls: Setting for the Peace Conference 1914

Above: L989.D.021.001 Postcard with image of The Clifton Hotel, setting for the Niagara Falls Peace Conference in 1914

"Although a very obscure event now, at the time it was a major news story that for many weeks placed Niagara Falls on the front page of virtually every daily newspaper in both North and South America. The “event” was a peace conference which took place here during May and June, 1914."
...

"The conference was held as the result of American intervention in the Mexican Revolution, a bloody, often confusing civil war which convulsed Mexico from late 1910 to 1920. Fearing for its interests in the Gulf of Mexico and hoping to alter the course of the revolution, the United States captured Mexico’s chief seaport, Veracruz, on April 22, 1914. This placed the two countries on the brink of war ..."
