FOR TEACHERS
Mackey Jr./Sr. High School CTE Teacher Trent Van Leuven Named Idaho Teacher of the Year
Career technical educator Trent Van Leuven was announced as the 2024 CapEd Credit Union Idaho Teacher of the Year in a ceremony at Mackey Jr./Sr. High School last week. In addition to being Idaho's nomination for National Teacher of the Year, Van Leuven received a commemorative plaque and a check for $10,000.
The innovation and leadership Trent displayed to start the Mackay Jr./Sr. High School aquaculture program are two of the reasons why he was chosen to represent Idaho as Teacher of the Year. Trent also oversees the greenhouse program, including two large greenhouses that grow local produce alongside tropical fruits like bananas, papaya, passion fruit and pineapple. Students then sell the plants at local grocery stores or through a school store housed in one of the campus greenhouses. He also teaches other CTE subjects, from animal science to horticulture to welding.
You can keep up with Van Leuven's work in his school and community by following the Mackay FFA page on Facebook.
