LEAGUE LEGACY

Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei!

It was a big weekend of iwi rugby league recently. Our Te Atiawa Tāne team regained their Championship title for the second year in a row and won the haka competition. Our Te Atiawa wāhine made the finals, losing to our Ngaa Rauru whanaunga. Kei runga noa atu koutou!
Congratulations also to all who made the tournament teams, and to Allana Prestney who received the Michael Katene Special Service Taonga.
Te Kotahitanga are proud to support our Te Atiawa league teams again at this years tournament. This is made possible through our Te Hononga Grants.
A big mihi to Ngaa Rauru for hosting the tournament, and to the Taranaki Whānui Rugby League committee for running another successful tournament. Next year the tournament will be hosted by Ngāti Maru.

TĀTAI TĀNGATA KI TE WHENUA

Our first ā-kanohi Tātai Tangata ki te Whenua wānanga was held recently with many of our full cohort of 20 whānau learning from our whanaunga Pounamu Skelton (Te Atiawa, Taranaki) at Te Rau o Rongo.

The session was hands-on and covered a number of māra topics including:

  • Hua Parakore tikanga māra
  • Seed Sowing
  • Seed transplanting
  • No dig gardens
  • Mulching pathways
All participants received their Tātai Tāngata ki te Whenua workbook and karakia, seeds, seedlings, gardening tools, a raised garden bed and soil to start their own māra. This 10-week programme is mainly delivered online with three ā-kanohi wānanga to connect with whanaunga and gain more māra knowledge.

We are offering another Tātai Tāngata ki te Whenua next in late-January 2023. If interested, please fill in the registration form and we'll be in touch.

NORTH TARANAKI VISITOR CENTRE

Kei ngā toki mārama, tēnā koutou, hei kupu tātaki māku me pēnei Tū mai Taranaki e, tiketike mai rā tātou, tihei mauri ora.

Earlier this year Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa took over the project management of the upcoming redevelopment of the North Egmont Visitor Centre. We are pleased to inform you about an important milestone in the development that holds significant value for Te Atiawa.

This upcoming redevelopment is about to be publicly notified through the Department of Conservation (‘DOC’) Concession process, as we seek the relevant permissions necessary to enable this development. We wanted to let our Te Atiawa whānau know first, before it is publicly notified.

A DIGITAL REDISCOVERY

We have brought some of our Te Atiawa historical kōrero and digital resources together and created a new 'Mātauranga' section accessible on the front page of our website.

We have eight different webpages which share information on our Te Atiawa history and the tribal history of Taranaki, watch our Taranaki Mounga webinar series, access our downloadable digital resources, watch videos of Te Atiawa Waiata and Poi Manu, learn karakia, and watch Radio NZ docuseries' on NZ Wars: Stories of Waitara.
