‘HEAD’ Lines

The Importance of Belonging

– A Social Contract

Dear Parents/Carers

For this week’s ‘HEAD’ Lines I have borrowed some words from a recent speech given by Amanda Spielman, the outgoing OFSTED Chief Executive – see attached document.

While they are aimed at education in general they are definitely relevant to John Hanson. They set out clearly the challenges that the education system faces and the part school, parents and students need to play in order that those (your children) currently working hard to be the best versions of themselves possible, take responsibility for their education and are supported in doing so by the adults around them, both in and outside of school.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Regards

Russell Stevens

Year 9 Judo star
We are  super proud to share with the school community that a Year 9 student, Jack McRae, has been selected for the England Judo squad for his age category.

Jack will train at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall,  where he will be training alongside the rest of the England team. Jack will continue to train with Team Bath as well as representing and fighting for England against other countries.  In November, Jack will travel to France to a competition and we wish him all the very best for that event and all those in his future.

Talented poets from across the whole school have now submitted their entries for the Young Writers “This is me” poetry competition. Whilst we’ll have to wait and see about the national competition results, the John Hanson winner will be announced next week when Mrs Ferris will select the very best entries for display on the Reading Room “Poetree”. The overall first place winner will receive a £10 Waterstones Voucher. Very well done and thank you to everyone that took part.

Next week, we also look forward to the Autumn Book Giveaway. On Thursday 19th October, at break and lunchtime, students will get to take home and keep some terrific books that have been donated to the school. Of course, there is always the wonderful selection of resources in the LRC that can be borrowed all year round!

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
