Becca Olson

Amy Loeffler | Senior Science Communicator/IAB

Becca Olson is trying to understand if cold-adapted bacteria in permafrost require less nutrients than their non-cold-adapted counterparts. Pursuing research through the lens of an astrobiologist, she’s hoping the microbes that she’s studying down here on Earth in the Boreal forest will be able to tell us something about life on other planets. Olson was recognized by the National Science Foundation last year with an Honorable Mention for her research in the competitive Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

When did you first know you wanted to be a science as a career?

I knew in high school that I wanted to pursue biology. I was a competitive gymnast pursuing college gymnastics teams when I took 10th grade biology. I had an inspirational teacher that allowed me to run gels and gain molecular lab experience while being flexible with an athletic schedule. I began to realize that it was possible for me to be a nearly full-time athlete while pursuing the demanding STEM degree that I wanted. This teacher helped me complete many college biology credits during high school. This allowed me to get a head start on courses and have a more flexible schedule in college.

Whose lab are you currently working in and what is your current research focus?

I am currently a master’s student in Mario Muscarella’s lab. My research is focused on anaerobic microbial cycles in boreal topsoil, specifically the methane and mercury cycles.

How has INBRE helped you achieve your research goals?

INBRE has funded me for two consecutive summers. This summer INBRE generously provided mentorship funding for myself and an undergraduate assistant. This allowed us to almost entirely finish my thesis research outside of the stress of the school year. Last summer, INBRE funding allowed me to take ownership of a separate research project, studying the impacts of herbicides on soil microbiomes. This will allow me to graduate in the spring of 2024 with (hopefully) two published papers. The support of INBRE over the last two summers has allowed me to work full-time on research projects specific to my education and research interests. For this I am tremendously grateful.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

During the summer, I enjoy living off the land as much as possible: fishing, gardening, foraging, canning etc. Most of my past research has involved soil quality and sustainable agriculture, due to this passion of mine. During the winter, I love skiing, ice climbing and anything mountain sport related. It is a dream of mine that one day my field work will involve alpine and glacier travel.
