The Survival Pantry is the part of your Prepper Pantry where you store those foods with very long shelf lives that can be ready in the event of a long-term emergency, which may seriously limit your availability to obtain food and supplies.

We don't know what the future will hold, but we can prepare now to help ourselves, our families, and our friends. I'll talk about the 27 BEST foods you can stock in your Survival Pantry to ensure you are well prepared with real food if you need to cope with a long-term emergency.

In this newsletter, I also talk about the baking recipes the cooler weather in central Texas ushered into my kitchen.

Learn New Baking Recipes this Fall with The Modern Pioneer Cookbook
Order my new book, The Modern Pioneer Cookbook
Note: If you've already ordered my book, thank you! And if you can leave me a review where you obtained my book, that would help others learn about traditional foods and techniques for their home kitchens. Thank you so much!

Thank you for Being a Sweet Friend

With fall in full swing here in the Texas Hill Country, we are enjoying lower humidity and the occasional rain storm. The cooler weather and gray skies have turned my attention back to baking, and there’s nothing better than baking an apple pie!

If you have wanted to make a homemade pie crust, I have one of the easiest recipes: an Apple Pandowdy. There is no way you can make this pie crust wrong. It comes out perfect every time.

The “dowdy” in the name may hint at why this pie crust is so easy to make. Dowdy has various definitions, but in the case of this pie crust, the best description of dowdy would be untidy. And that’s a good thing! That’s what makes this pie crust so easy to make because it’s basically untidy. Yet, it will be one of the most delicious pie crusts and apple pies you have ever had!

When you make the pie crust, you just cut the dough into a lot of little squares and then layer the squares over the apple filling. After you pop it in the oven, you'll periodically take a spoon and press down on the little squares to allow all the pie juices to bubble up over them.

This process creates the most luscious, crispy, sticky, sweet topping you have ever had on a pie. It can’t be beat, and you will receive a host of oohs and aahs when you bring this apple pie to the table.

In addition to apple pie, you can make many wonderful recipes with a bounty of fall apples. One of my favorites is a homemade apple sauce that is a helpful staple to have in your fridge. It makes a tasty snack, and you can also use it to bake quick breads in various ways. (In baking recipes, Apple sauce is a good substitute for eggs or butter.)

And let's remember that when it comes to creating our traditional foods kitchen, we are also creating a no-waste kitchen. Gather up all your apple scraps to make raw apple scrap vinegar!

It takes little effort, uses something that might have otherwise gone into the trash or the compost heap, and will yield you a plentiful supply of raw apple “cider” vinegar. (We don’t need to tell anyone we used apple scraps instead of cider. They won't be able to tell the difference!)

So, I hope you are having a wonderful start to your fall and will try your hand at making an Apple Pandowdy. I'm sure it will become a regular treat on your holiday table. And adding a bit of ice cream on the side will make a delicious dessert even better! 😊
Love and God Bless,
Mary
