The Department of Social Sciences offices will be closed October 19-22 for the fall semester recess. The office will be open again at 8am on October 23rd.
  • TODAY @Noon: Coffee Conversations w/ special guest - Environmental Policy/Sustainability Expert - Dr. Bonnie Keeler
    • Monday 10/16/23 at Noon in the AOB Commons- all welcome! 
    • Dr. Keeler is an associate professor at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, where she co-directs the Center for Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy. Keeler works at the intersection of sustainability science and environmental economics, with particular expertise in water management and policy.
    • Keeler leads the Beyond the Academy network - a coalition of university leaders seeking to reform academic models to promote actionable, engaged scholarship on sustainability. Keeler is also the co-director of the CREATE Initiative, a graduate fellowship program and community-engaged research effort at the intersection of environment and equity, and a co-PI on the Minneapolis-St. Paul Long-term Ecological Research site.

  • The Natural Resource Career Fair will be held on Tuesday October 17th from 10am-2pm in the Atrium and surrounding hallways of the UJ Noblet (Forestry) building.

Congratulations! 
  • New Major Award!!
    • Congratulations to Dr. Chelsea Schelly who is the lead investigator on a $1.25M award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The project is titled "Drivers of Energy Service Transitions and Impacts on Well-being in Forest Dependent Rural Communities." It is funded under the EPA program Drivers and Environmental Impacts of Energy Transitions in Underserved Communities.
    • Dr. Schelly is leading an interdisciplinary team that includes Dr. Jenny Apriesnig (COB), Ana Dyreson (ME-EM), Sarah Green (Chem), Jiehong Guo and Judith Perlinger (both CEGE) and Shiliang Wu (GMES).  Dave Bohac and Lester Shen from the Center for Energy and Environment are also members of the research team for the project.
Social Scientists in Action
  • Last weekend Dr. Dan Trepal hosted a booth at Michigan Archaeology Day in Lansing, MI.  There he talked about the Industrial Heritage & Archaeology, History, and Anthropology programs.  He highlighted the work of the Keweenaw Time Traveler and the newly launched Hamtramck Deep Map project.\
    • On Sunday, Dr. Trepal launched the Hamtramck Deep Map project, a collaboration with Dr. Lafreniere, Dr. Krysta Ryzewski of Wayne State University and the Hamtramck Historical Museum.  The online deep map allows users to interact with layers of historic maps, photos, documents, stories, and artifacts unearthed by archaeologists in Hamtramck.

  • Call for Peace Corps Prep Certificates
    • The deadline for submitting Peace Corps Prep exit checklists for this semester is Friday, October 20, 2023.
    • If you think you have completed the Peace Corps Prep Certificate requirements, contact Professor Henquinet kbhenqui@mtu.edu for the checklist and return it to her by that date.

Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  • The Vernacular Architecture Forum is coming to Michigan Tech!
    • Consider submitting your work to present a paper or a poster at the annual meeting of the VAF on June 12 – June 15, 2024, which is being hosted in the Social Sciences Department next year.
    • Volunteers will be needed. Even if you don’t submit a paper, please consider volunteering to help during the cultural landscape tours on June 13-14. Social Sciences students who volunteer for the conference can attend the conference for free! Look for more info in the Spring. 
    • Students and emerging professionals may apply for the Pamela H. Simpson Presenter’s Fellowships, which offer support of up to $1000 for presenting papers and posters at VAF’s annual conference.

Undergrad:
  • Urban Waters & Wildlife Partnership Coordinator
    • This position will focus on reducing or eliminating pollution and runoff, improving water quality, and protecting habitat while promoting citizen engagement and knowledge.
    • Application deadline: November 3, 2023
    • The Long Tom Watershed Council is seeking applicants for an Urban Waters and Wildlife Partnership Coordinator who will support the work of the Urban Waters and Wildlife Partnership (UWWP) and the Trout Friendly Landscape Program.
Grad Positions:
  • Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Fellow Programs is seeking experts, fellows, reviewers, and offers to host technical support units for their next assessment reports. 
    • The fellows program is specifically for graduate students and postdocs who want to learn more about international environmental assessments, and network with global professionals.
    • Nominees are invited to complete the application form and attach their curriculum vitae through the dedicated web portal.
  • ENERGY JUSTICE LAB (ENJ)
    • We are hiring a full-time Lab Manager. The Lab Manager will help manage all ENJ projects and oversee progress on the utility disconnection dashboard.
    •  Ideally candidates will also have some coding knowledge (R and Python) and/or grant writing skills.
    • The position is set up as either remote or working at University of Pennsylvania. 
  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory Position
    • The NREL University Partnerships program is looking for person to lead the highly impactful NREL Student Training in Applied Research (STAR) undergraduate program and also manage NREL’s portfolio of Minority Serving Institution partners. 
    • This is a full-time position in Golden Colorado
    • Annual salary range: $77,600 - $139,700
  • University of Victoria Indigenous Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies
    • The assistant professor will focus on political ecology, ethnoecology, and ecological restoration.
      • "The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to our core teaching in one of these areas and lead a research program that critically engages with contemporary environmental challenges."
