Seriously! What’s Happening in East Canyon?

Week of October 20, 2023

In this issue:

Seriously 2.0! What's Changing?
Last week we took a little bit of a much needed break as we contemplated how to deliver Seriously! as a long-term, sustainable offering to neighbors. It’s a lot of work! But we want to make it even better because we have so many ideas that we think you will love!

Here’s our plan for Seriously! 2.0:

Our regular edition packed with all the goodies will come out every two weeks. We will release it on Fridays, late afternoon. AND we will release a compact Seriously! Dispatch! edition in the off weeks. The Dispatch editions will  include event listings, public meetings, and any especially time-sensitive news items.
Here are some of the new features on our drawing board:
  • Small Business Spotlight! An opportunity to learn about our local entrepreneurs and their establishments.
  • Applause for Neighborhood Volunteers! Here we’ll celebrate with individuals and groups who are actively improving the quality of life in East Canyon for all of us.
  • Kaleidoscope! We’ll focus on what Oaklanders want our local government to address. One hot issue at a time, we’ll dig  into an array of local and state government information sources and try to bring into view the best local news coverage on this issue. Our aim is to probe what is–or isn’t–happening, taking a look at roadblocks and successes in making positive change for Oaklanders in East Canyon and across the city.
  • Updates and corrections! We will post Seriously! articles on the website, where we can make updates and corrections as needed. Please check the website for the latest version of articles.
If you like where we’re headed, please share Seriously! with your neighbors and encourage them to subscribe. If you have feedback for us, send us an email at 22xneighbors@gmail.com.

Rosa's Hair Salon
Happy days! What a find! My husband, Greg, and I have been going to Berkeley to get haircuts for years. But I like to keep it local! And I’ve had my eye on Rosa’s Hair Salon for some time. But it can be a little scary trying out a new hair salon.

Tuesday I booked an appointment with Rosa, and then Wednesday at 2pm, she welcomed me with a smile into her fresh salon. I enjoyed chatting with Rosa about family and Oakland, and most importantly, I love my new bob! The pricing schedule is affordable enough for me to leave a generous tip, which always feels good. Thanks, Rosa! Looking forward to my next haircut!

You’ll find Rosa’s Hair Salon at 2435 MacArthur Blvd, between Lincoln and Boston Avenues. Give Rosa a call at 510-228-9113. Tell her Seriously! sent you!

1 Tip 4 U 2 B Safe

A weekly tidbit to boost neighborhood safety & security

by Carol Van Steenberg
Trunk or Treat! Free event on October 28, 5:00-7:30 pm at 1430 Leimert, Berkshire Hathaway & Rocky’s Parking Lot.
Have a Ghastly Halloween–with NO Mishaps!

Lots of treats, only funny tricks, that’s our wish for you and your family this Halloween. Candy, costumes and community galore!

But beware: Did you know that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by vehicles on Halloween night? Most often between 6 and 7 pm. Emergency rooms also see large spikes in allergy admissions that night.
We’ve concocted a witch’s brew of tips this week to keep you safe while having fun.
  • Prep that pumpkin with care. How about “carving” with paint or stickers? Or with pumpkin-carving tools? If you plan to use a sharp knife, keep a firm grip on the handle and put your forefinger and thumb on the blade to guide it.
  • Pick fitting outfits. Right length and size can avoid tripping, catching on bushes, or worse, catching on fire.
  • The mask? Test visibility through the eye holes, and breathability. Double-check shoelaces (tied) and whether shoes are easy to walk in (not just adorable).
  • Lighten up! But not by candles in pumpkins. Use battery-powered “flames” there instead. Here’s an example. Be seen by others as you forage for goodies— with a flashlight or an LED light plus reflective tape on your flame-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories. Put reflective tape on your flame-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories. Lots of types here.
  • Choose your route wisely. Stay in familiar neighborhoods, walk don’t run between houses, cross streets at corners or cross walks after looking both ways. When possible, go where there are sidewalks and good lighting. Skip homes with their lights out.
  • Find the sweet spot. Stay outside to get candy (don’t go inside a home), make sure your trick-or-treaters have adult supervision—especially the little ones. Take the night off if you can, and go with them. Wait until you get home to sample the loot,  when you can inspect it and be sure it’s properly sealed and its ingredients are allergy safe.
  • Start early and don’t stay out late.
Have a wonderful time!If you’re eager for home security tips or COVID safety tips for Halloweening, you’ll find 58 of them at Safe Smart Living
Applause for Neighborhood Volunteers!
A Neighborhood Sunday Stroll
On a perfect October Sunday afternoon, neighbors from age 1 to 90+ arrived, powered by strollers, walking sticks, canes and their own two feet, some with four-footed friends. Many picked up new reflective vests, and lots of information about the neighborhood and public safety. They all enjoyed the first Oakmore Bridge Stroll.

Sponsored by the Oakmore Homes Association’s Public Safety Committee, this free event encouraged walking all over several hilly, winding routes. The purpose?

For neighbors to meet neighbors and become acquainted with important public safety resources.

Thanks to the Oakland Police Department and the Oakland Fire Department, residents got to chat with officers and climb into a gorgeous fire engine. At various “stations” throughout the ‘hood, strollers appreciated a youth jazz performance, munched on pizza (thank you, Red Boy!), enjoyed a garage rock band, had a snack and a sip of water for themselves or their pups, made a stick puppet, drew sunbeams and a bridge on a parking lot and cooled off with popsicles (provided by Rocky’s Market). A few hearty souls did it all!

*********

This new Seriously! feature, "Applause for Neighborhood Volunteers," celebrates the individuals and groups who are actively improving the quality of life in East Canyon for all of us.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity? Concerned about fire safety? Consider joining the Park Steward program of Oakland's Firesafe Council. Park Steward Volunteers regularly work on fuel reduction and restoration in Oakland parks and open spaces, and new volunteers are always welcome.
Introducing: Kaleidoscope
Kaleidoscope. A continually changing pattern of shapes and colors.

That’s what societal change looks like. There is no singular fix for any social problem, and solutions are never realized in the timeframe demanded by constituents with raised fists. How do we track a Kaleidoscope? We need to pay close attention to all of the moving parts. That’s what our new feature, Kaleidoscope, is about.

Oaklanders Want Safer Streets!

Who doesn’t think crime is a problem in Oakland? Whether we’re talking about bipping (breaking car windows and stealing items from the car), stolen vehicles, reckless driving, small-business burglaries, organized retail theft, armed robberies, or, the worst, homicides, Oaklanders want it all to STOP! Yesterday!

We’re much more likely to see news headlines about the crimes than the work local officials are doing to make Oakland Safer. State and local officials all know we want safer streets, and they are working toward that goal.

Here’s a brief snapshot of current efforts. We cannot include everything here. You can find more information at most of the links provided below.

Help! A Car Is Blocking My Driveway!
You have an urgent appointment but your car’s in your garage and you can’t get it out! You’ve checked with your neighbors. No one recognizes that car blocking you. Someone says that stolen cars are being dumped randomly. Maybe it’s one of those.

What do you do? Who do you call for help?

If a vehicle is blocking your driveway and you can’t get out, call Parking Enforcement dispatch during business hours at (510) 238-3099
After hours call Police Non-emergency at (510) 777-3333.

A technician or officer will come to cite and to tow the vehicle as appropriate. MORE INFORMATION

By calling Parking Enforcement, rather than OPD, when you can, you’ll get the help you need more quickly and OPD can focus on its core functions.

As a GlenFriends* post put it, “With our crime rate, would you prefer OPD officers coming to your address with tow staff, or OPD officers responding to emergencies involving alleged violent crime or investigating violent crime/crime patterns?” And why wait in the 911 hold cue with as many as 100s of others!
