Six UGA students and four staff members received scholarships and awards during the Black Faculty and Staff Organization’s 2023 Founders Award Scholarship Ceremony, held Sept. 19.
Among the honorees was Myesha Mateen, an RA in Church Hall. Myesha is a fourth-year student studying biology with a minor in sociology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
During the luncheon, Victor Wilson, vice president for student affairs, led a conversation with Asa Boynton, one of the BFSO founders. Boynton discussed his various roles in public safety and some of his greatest joys during his time at UGA.
Boynton also offered some encouraging words to attendees. “Remember that iron sharpens iron,” Boynton said. “Don’t hang out with the worst. Don’t be with the mediocre. Find the people who are setting the pace, and run with them. You can be sharpened by the people in your field who are doing the job in an excellent way.”
Congratulations, Myesha!
Get involved in the UGA Mentor Program
The UGA Mentor Program, the University's first comprehensive mentorship initiative, is a digital platform which allows students to form mentoring relationships and/or schedule 15-30 minute Quick Chats (formerly known as informational interviews) with UGA Mentors (faculty, staff, and alumni), regardless of geographic location, who can help make their future a little clearer.
Mentorship is proven to help students succeed in their personal, academic, and professional endeavors. With our busy schedules, it can be hard to know where to start, but just 1-2 hours a month can change the trajectory of a students life.
Our personalized mentoring experience allows you to connect with students no matter your location and on your schedule. If you’re not sure where to start, there are guidelines, icebreakers, and other resources on this site to guide you along the way.
Bulldog helps Chick-fil-A
bring new menu items to life
Chick-fil-A’s classic chicken sandwiches and waffle fries are beloved by fans around the world—but how does the brand introduce new items to their iconic menu?
Kaitlin Miller Febles (AB ’13, AB ’13, ABJ ’13) is a menu and packaging category lead in Chick-fil-A’s marketing department and a member of the 2023 class of the UGA Alumni Association’s 40 Under 40. In her role, she provides strategic leadership to menu additions, deletions, or simplifications from their initialization through their launch at restaurants.
Although you were a only a student at UGA for a short time, you are an alumnus for life! Our alumni are very important to us. We want to stay in touch with you concerning events in your area and on the UGA campus, and we also want to know about your achievements as an UGA alumnus. Please contact Susan Dodson, your alumni relations coordinator, if you need any University Housing information or to share your photos or important life events with your fellow Dawgs!
Your community is a strong one. Your pride, your degree, your memories, and your accomplishments will forever tie you to UGA and to your fellow alums. Being a Bulldog is more than great memories and connecting with others like you. It’s about supporting current students. It’s about uplifting your institution. Give back to the university that gave you so much.
