OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Domestic Violence Resources for
Rural Communities

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. NCALL, the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life provides many resources and tools to respond to abuse in later life, an issue that lies at the intersection between domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse. One such resource is the Rural Domestic and Sexual Abuse Program Advocates: Making a Difference in The Lives of Older Survivors of Abuse Toolkit. Rural domestic and sexual abuse service programs can play a crucial role in providing older survivors the advocacy and services they need to be safe and to heal from the trauma of abuse.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TOOLKIT
If you suspect physical elder abuse, be sure to document and describe all your findings. Be able to recognize the signs of physical abuse including bruising, fractures, burns, hoarse voice (signs of strangulation), pressure sores, and misuse of medications. Additional types of elder abuse may also be present. Explore and document the possibility of other types of elder abuse. Learn more about the other types of elder abuse on EAGLE.
TYPES OF ELDER ABUSE
In collaboration with IACP, a six-part roll call video series was developed to enable law enforcement to better identify signs of elder abuse and recognize evidence that can lead to the successful prosecution of criminals. Watch the video below to learn about a real Physical Abuse case and how it was resolved.
NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY IS OCTOBER 28!

Long Beach Senior Police Partners

In recognition of National First Responders Day on October 28, EAGLE would like to highlight the heroes in our community, the Long Beach Police Department Senior Partners Program. The Senior Police Partners are a dedicated group of volunteers that work hand-in-hand with the Long Beach Police Department to provide civilian support and meet the needs of vulnerable older adults in the community. Senior Police Partners are trained to assist fellow older adults in the area of crime prevention, peer support advice and resource referrals, and each year, they donate over 5,000 hours and help hundreds of senior citizens throughout Long Beach.  Thank you to the Long Beach Police Department and the Senior Police Partners for all their work in the community to prevent elder abuse. If you live in the Long Beach area and are interested in volunteering for the program or taking advantage of some of the offered services, please click the button for more information.

Elder Abuse First Responder Checklist

In recognition of National First Responders Day on October 28, we would like to highlight the First Responder Checklist. This EAGLE resource is an excellent tool to use when you first begin a case and you suspect elder abuse. The checklist first prompts you to get eyes on the older adult and note any observations related to the older adult's present condition, hygiene and appearance, as well as the state of their environment and who else may be around. The checklist then prompts you to recognize and document potential signs of elder abuse. Use this checklist as a supplement to your narrative and collection of evidence.
