“Banned” Books Week, an annual event sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) that promotes controversial and explicit books, took place last week. Don’t believe the book “ban” hoax, though–there are no blanket bans on books in our country. The most challenged books featured in “Banned” Books Week materials are readily available in school libraries, public libraries, and bookstores across the country. 

Parents and community members have drawn attention to the so-called “banned” books due their sexually explicit content. Parents are understandably concerned about libraries offering books that school board members admit are too explicit to be read aloud at public meetings. When school librarians purchase and feature developmentally inappropriate books, parents can and should speak up.

American schools have all but abandoned civics education, and they have the test scores to prove it: Only 22% of eighth graders are proficient in civics, according to the latest Nation’s Report Card. Fortunately, the Daniels Fund and the U.S. Chamber Foundation have stepped up with a way to help kids learn: The National Civics Bee, which quizzes 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on their knowledge of how the government works.
