During our 20th Anniversary Celebration of Worker Justice, we were delighted to recognize the Egan Legal Team as Champion of Worker Justice for their tenacity in tackling complex wage and hour cases on behalf of low-wage workers, innovative legal strategies that have led to state and national legal precedents, and generosity in sharing their expertise with others.

Attorney Jon Egan and paralegal Michèle Lauzier have been representing workers in wage-and-hour cases, focusing on class and collective actions, for over 18 years and have won more than $52 million for their clients. Together with their colleague, Terry Shand, who passed away in 2021, they formed innovative legal strategies helped protect restaurant servers from tip-stealing and forced tipping pools and set important precedent at state and national levels. Tackling wage-and-hour class actions that relatively few Oregon lawyers would handle, the Egan team has racked up big victories against large corporations such as Starbucks, Amazon, Dave & Busters, Jack-in-the-Box and Home Depot. They have served as counsel of record in over 100 reported federal opinions and over 20 appeals, including 10 in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Egan legal team channeled this expertise into policy advocacy, collaborating on the text of the successful 2016 Wage Theft Bill, SB 1587.

The Egan legal team continue to show the power of class and collective actions as forces that can level the economic playing field and bring meaningful accountability from employers for economic exploitation of their employees. They've done so with incredible generosity, encouraging other lawyers to take up the cause of protecting wages and supporting them in the endeavor. We are proud to honor them for all of their hard work, dedication and courage in the fight for worker justice.

"When a class action is settled, any unclaimed money is usually invested in a nonprofit as the next best way to advance the core interests of the class members. It’s called a “cy pres” award... I always ask the Court to designate NWJP for our cy pres awards, because there is no better way to help local workers. They’re a force multiplier for those of us who do wage-and-hour enforcement. Behind the scenes, in the courtroom, and on the streets, NWJP is working every day to make workers' lives better, and we’re proud to be a part of that in any way we can. So thank you for this award, but more importantly, thank you NWJP for fighting the good fight."
